| Post subject: | windshield wiper bushings |
The windshield wiper bushing that connects the wiper arm to the motor eccentric keeps coming loose and the wipers will not work. I am using new bushings. Is there some "engineering change" that I can make to ensure that the bushing does not come out? This is on a 1986 Dodge D150 pickup. |

They should "snap" in place and not come off. And by that I mean they are a pain in the ass to snap in place. I had the same issue where I thought they were connected and would work for 5mins until they popped off. I would try putting to bearing on the "pin" side 1st all the way. Then line up the other side with the hole and use a vice grip to squeeze the arms together. Maybe some type of lubricant would help as well. I havent seen any upgrades to change this setup though.... |

Is there any play between the nylon bushing and bolt? Or any play overall? I was thinking it might help to weld a metal collar on the arm then insert the nylon bushing. But maybe im over thinking it. |

I've changed a bunch of these over the years (74-76 Darts) and never had a problem, Press them in with a C-clamp backed up by a socket. Pre-lube with Dow Corning DC-4 silicone lube grease, or a grease made for electronics installations, and safe for plastics. My 2 cents. |

Pressing them in was never a problem for me. But once they have been lubed and pressed, they are a bear to get back into the cowl without them falling back apart. The nylon bushings I bought at the hardware store were an exact fit for the 3/8" bolts. They do not have any slop. And I tighten the nut down to take out any play up and down. I don't know how long they will last but I will post back in 20 years and let you know. Rick |

Just a FYI. These bushing are still available from the dealer, and very much better then the ones at the part stores. |

O-reileys part said they for 1974-1998...which is funny because I bought them for the same part Chrylser lists them as 1962-1995...they work for my 73'. I can't recall the part numbers but they both work, message me for it if I don't reply back with them. BTW, both were Dorman parts with different parts' numbers and quality.p.s. packages for them are in the car and I can get to them tomorrow. I used a little bearing grease for them and they work great!

I gently bumped the bushings in against a vise-clamp (table mount with a rubber mallet) Took seconds. I tried this after after c-clamps failed...many times. c-clamps=dumb

My 73' Scamp had first broke a wiper bushing in 2007 at basically 34 years as well. The life cycle on these bushings are 34 years...trust me...I seen some more photos of a 73' scamp rebuilding the wipers within the last few years.

If I was ever going to use the stock type bushings again, I would go to Chrysler and get them. I am not at all sure the Dorman ones are made from the same material. Some of the ones I changed did not "snap" in place like I thought they should. That is why they would pop off while trying to wrestle them back into the cowl. |

I highly doubt they're made from from the same material as well. If anything, these appear to have been made from harder plastics. Plastics have been been greatly made differently today than they were 30+ years ago. UV rays degrade plastic quickly but seeing as these are under the dash, I think they should last. Also they pop off so easily because they're a tight fit..from the factory they installed these probably without the dash in (real quick/easy). I ran my wipers between all levels for about 10 minutes and they hold up. I'm not not sure I would go to Chrysler for these now...isn't Chrysler owned by the Europeons now? Dormans made in China but the Europeons are lazy...
