| Post subject: | Leaking manual steering gearbox |
It would seem the manual steering gearbox is leaking on my -65 Valiant, (stock, manual steering). I checked, and there still seems to be lube in it, but I'd hate to ruin it, so I guess it's time for a seal change. Rockauto has (one) "Steering Gear Sector Shaft Seal", NATIONAL 6859S. Is this the correct seal? The one that seals where the pitman arm enters? AND does anybody know if this NATIONAL 6859S seal is correct? Earllier when I searced I think I ran into some doubts about it, but I fail to locate the article/message now. Any help much appreciated as always. Maurice |

Anybody? Such difficult questions I have... Does anyone happen to have one of these steering boxes lying around on a shelf? If yes, I would be very grateful for a measurement of the inner diameter. If it is approximately the same as the one given by Rockauto, I'm pretty sure the seal is correct. Thanks again, Maurice |

I have a manual box I'm getting ready to ship to Australia. Would the way to measure the ID of the seal would be to measure the OD of the sector shaft? As you can tell, I'm really not up on steering boxes! |

Cant say I am very familiar with them either. This is the first time I'm looking into the matter myself. I haven't taken it apart yet (I'm afraid to try before I have the correct seal), so I'm not quite sure what to expect. I have looked at the pictures in the service manual and that's about it. Your idea sounds good too. Measuring the outer diameter of the sector shaft at the location of the seal should give the inner diameter of the seal. I know the measurements cant be totally accurate, but if they reasonably correspond to the measurements of the NATIONAL 6859S seal, I'm pretty sure it's the correct one. I rebuilt a manual steering box that now resides in the 68 Barracuda, was a PS car. Thanks, more good info. Which led to even more... My head is humming now. I wish I were 30 years younger. It was so much easier to get a grasp of things then. I actually had a pretty sharp brain then... Anybody else ever have that feeling? |

I finally found my calipers and the output shaft measures 1.125 inches. That should get you close enough to source the correct seal (I hope). |

Thank you Dartman, that confirms my thougths. (SKF) 11067 should work then. I ran ito some contradictory information about this. And thanks to everybody else too, I just wish I weren't always the helped one. It would be nice to be able to be once on the giving end. Live and learn, maybe one day... |
