Post subject:  intake manifold

I am building a 225, and looking at the different intakes that are availiable out there..I have a clifford 4 bbl intake, and looking at the Hurricane, and was wondering if they out perform the clifford? Is it worth the bang for the buck. Im putting the 280/270 cam with the head shaved 100ths. the head was ported and polished 340 valves installed (188's) with the 390 holley, stock bottom. I have the clifford shorties I will be using as headers. So the question is should I waste my money on a hurricane?

No.

Unless you are going for the look, the adventure of tuning it, or need the length to tune the build for a certain power band, the hurricane will not out perform or out breathe a clifford shorty (the only long ram manifold that would come close would be a Dutra Fat Pak, which is a very rare item).

Do those intake valves clear the cylinder bores?

IIRC, they do Josh, but I have to believe they are shrouded by the wall very badly.

It's the exhaust valve that has problems with clearance. Up around 1.54" anything less than a 0.060" overbore may have clearance issues. Depending on the head cut, alignment and valve lift, you can tag the deck. I did it on a metric 0.045" overbore. Nothing like rebuilding a brand new head...

thanks for the input guys,,thats what i thought the answer would be, just wanted it verified. Yes the valves clear the bore, it was bored 30 over..Im doing a rebuild on it because the fuel pump diaphram leaked fuel in the engine, and washed the cylinder walls..car ran good with this combination, along with a 3000 stall converter. I ll just go back with the clifford intake. With this build combo I was thinking of jumping up to a 650 holley..do you think this is to big, or should I stay with the 390. ?

650 would work well if you tune it right, especially if you have a 3.91 or better in the rear.

I think the 390 will perform better and be easier to tune than a 650 for that setup. The 650 could be made to work, but it will be a lot tougher and will not get you much if any gain.
