Hey guys, I need a little bit of advise. I have a 225 slant 6 in a 1984 dodge d150. I recently pulled the engine out, now I have it back in. While it was out, I installed: New timing chain, new clutch, new distrubtor, new cap, spark plug wire and plugs, new fuel filter, new exhaust manifold, removed some broke manifold studs out the side if the head, ect. Now with everything back installed I have to pet the gas pedal while spinning it over to get it to run. Having a hard time getting it to idle without holding the gas to it.if I do hold the gas down to it review up, it will backfire through the carb. Can anybody run me through the timing process, or tell me anything to check that I might have done wrong? BTW it's a 225 slant 6 manual. The sticker in the engine compartment says 12°BTC Thanks guys, Craig |

Is it the original motor? No modifications? Just to be sure, which carb do you have (previous owner might have changed from original conditions). If it backfires through the carb it might have too much timing. 1- Did you set timing with engine running with hot engine, vacuum disconnected, 600-700 rpm idle? Did you use a timing gun? Did you connect the distributor to the proper vacuum port in the carb (after setting timing)? (assuming yours work this way, don't remember when they moved to the computer controlled carb. Check your service manual). Try to run less timing to see if it improves 2 - The harmonic balancer might have slipped, so time marks might have shifted. Was it removed properly? I'm guessing the car ran ok with the same balancer... did you check if the timing was 12 deg before uninstalling the engine?. Again, try less timing to see if it improves 3- Which timing set you installed? A graduable one (i.e. Rollmaster) that have multiple notches to graduate timing in the crankshaft hub? Is it properly installed (dots aligned). you might have them misaligned by a tooth. (not sure if it will run or not with that misalignment). Spark should be ok. Yours have hydraulic lifters, so you wont require to graduate lifters. Start checking the previous points. If somebody can describe to you the 1984 service manual timing procedure, it would be nice. |

As far as I know this is the original motor, My distrubtor does not have the vaccum hook up have not used timing gun was hoping somebody could run me through the process Harmonic balancer was removed correctly do not see an issue with that Timing holes on cam and notch on crank were lined up when chain was installed, have got engine to run for a short amount of time the will stall out and cut off |

My '84 W150 has the lean burn ignition system with no vacuum advance. Make sure all the vacuum lines are routed correctly as per the decal on the left inner fender. I had to play with my initial timing to get it right. I hooked up a vacuum gauge and set the timing for highest vacuum at idle which I checked with a timing light to be 22 degrees BTC. |

check plug wire routing again. set timing to 12 degrees top dead center at idle. readjust idle. you may have to adjust the idle mix screw of it has one. |
