Installed a new tach. Would not work...hooked the green wire to ignition source (negative) IG coil as it says. No work. Tried hooking it to the Positive side of the IG coil instead...and it works now. Strange. Is this bad?

Most likely, the wires on the coil are switched. It happens and usually the coil will still work.

I had a feeling this might be the case. It's been sitting for a few years since I replaced the coil. Would this cause the engine to not run right at certain ranges? Reason I ask is I've been having troubles with it idling and I especially around 1000rpm and below.
thanks

Technically, it shouldn't make a difference, however I have heard many stories where it does. Primary thing that occurs is the coil does not develop its full rated spark. I have also heard that the coil reacts 'slower' causing weird timing issues.
I always try to ensure the correct polarity at the coil just to eliminate any variables.

I should have checked wiring diagrams before. Diagram confirmed they're backwards. Thanks.

Let us know if it makes any noticeable performance differences.

tthe fac|tory manufactur reversed the studs on the coil so the |) for + ring terminal fit on the negative stud instead of () ring terminal that was suppose to be for negative. Basically since the studs on the coil were installed backwards. The positive ring terminal usually should only fit on positive because the ring terminal has a straight edge in it. So when I installed the coil I must have connected it the only way it would connect. I ended up snipping both rings and installing new ones. Works just about the same.
