Hey folks,

I need advice to get my van going. Last month, a friend of mine conviced me to add a can of seafoam in my gas tank and it looks like it's causing me problems.

So.. I added the additive and drove for 500-600 kms and it went just fine but the next morning, my van stalled as soon as i putted it under load. Now it barely runs and stalls quickly. It does not idles and it dies when I push the gas. There is a sucking noise at the carburetor that gets worse when I push the gas pedal.

I got new clean plugs and new gas filter. Good spark and fuel does get past the filter and in the carb. I retorqued the carb to intake bolts and manifolds to block nuts, plugged all the vaccuum hoses except for vaccuum advance (points ignition) and I did not find a vaccuum leak with the piece of hose to the ear thing (although, it was the first time I tried that method so I might of screwed up..) I don't know about fuel pressure, I'll try to find the tools tommorrow and I did try to play with the mixture without success. Finally, when I tried to tweak the timing, it did idle a little bit better but would start hesitating and stalling with the gas on. The timing and idle speed were done with light and tachometer 2 months ago.

Anybody has an idea what can I look at? I'm still new to mechanica by the way and my carb is a Holley 1945. I got the 225 under the hood.

Cheers

Emanuel

Doublecheck for vacuum leaks.

Is the "sucking noise" new?

Did you put in the new plugs, fuel filter, etc after the Seafoam?

How's your PCV?

I'm betting on plugged idle passages in the carburetor. Dan had this advice for someone in a similar situation: http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... rew#443540

Hey, thanks for the replies.

I did all the work after the seafoam. Now I just dropped a rebuilt carb on it and it will run fine but won't idle.. It was idling perfeclty after the new carb, timing and curb idling adjustment. I drove it for 10 km, parked it and now it wont idle unless I block completely the carb with my hand. Looks like a vacuum leak but I can't find it. Hoses are fine, carb to intake and intake to block are solid too..

Any ideas?

I still believe you have plugged idle circuits. Did you follow Dan's procedure?

Check the hose that goes from the intake runner to the power break booster.. Mine did the same thing. wiggle the hose around and check for leaks at both ends of it.

Being the person in the post Josh linked, I can confirm. Seafoam is a good fuel system cleaner, but any cleaner can dislodge stuff that then ends up in places it shouldn't. The idle circuit is responsible for a lot more than just idle performance, which is the reason I didn't consider it when my car was running like garbage.

First step I'd recommend is buy a can of starting fluid and go to town looking for vacuum leaks. Set the carb up in a way that it'll stay running, then spray everything while listening for changes in RPM. Every hose, every connection, the manifold to head interface, the carb to manifold interface. If you don't find anything, then grab a can of carb cleaner and do the procedure Dan recommended. If that helps, then maybe change your fuel filter again just to be safe.

Hey folks,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write these problems and sorry for not giving any feedback. I just got back into cell service.

It turns out it somehow fixed itself with fresh premium gaz and having a vaccum leak fixed as well. Now the van runs amazing. Compression and vaccuum are dialled.

I also just putted my hands on an 85 slanted cargo van that I am going to rebuild and bombproof the tranny so I can swap it on my heavy camper.

Cheers, have fun and stay passionnate!
