Post subject:  lean burn replacement

1982 D-150, a/t, air, just past 100K miles and then the vacuum transducer lost vacuum....If I could just find a good transducer, I could repair it, but I doubt any around anymore .....I actually have a 1980 vacuum distributor, single pickup, on a shelf here at the house, Holley 1945 carb on my truck. If I just pull the lean burn dizzy and put the vac style dizzy on, any other disconnects/connections I need to make? Not really interested in the GM HEI version except as a last resort.

Post subject:  You would....

The EI distributor needs a 'brain' to fire the coil to get the spark to your spark plug...

For EI the tooth on the reluctor and the tooth on the pick up when they line up sends a signal to the EI Module (whether a Mopar EI box 4 or 5 pin connector), or GM HEI...the module then sends a signal down another wire to fire the coil.... (on the typical 4 wire module 1 wire is power to the module- usually keyed hot ignition, 1 goes to the coil, and the other 2 are for the pickup trigger)...

The only option that would not require any new modules would be to go with points, which only needs a connection wire to the coil, and the mechanical mechanism inside if adjusted right will take care of triggering the spark).

So if you use the EI distributor... you will need:

Option #1: junkyard trip to find a pre-1981 non lean burn mopar to scavenger the EI module and wiring harness (assuming both are good).

Option #2: buy the HEI module, some wire, and connectors and hook it all up per the various articles noted...

Beware- you need to verify that your carburetor has a correct vacuum advance port for use with a distributor. Some lean burn carburetors only had a full-vacuum port for the computer and not a ported v=nipple for a distributor.

Converting a lean burn ignition to HEI is the absolute easiest swap you can use. Keep your stock coil. Wire the (+) feed for the HEI unit to the (+) coil wire and the (-) HEI feed to the (-) coil wire. DONE!
