if everything goes well, by this time tomorrow the 83 D150 3.23 rear gears will have been replaced by an 3.73 gear set. https://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@ ... 1255131361 Doing the work on Sunday at Dennis's SkunkWorks garage, location is so secrete that MapQuest can't find it. Plan is to arrive at 10:30 local time tomorrow and for the change out to commence. Pulling the 68 Barracuda on a trailer behind the 83 D150,, at highway speeds ( 60 to 65 ) the performance of the D150 is great. It is pulling away from a stop, specifically if the pull away involves getting up an incline, is where I am looking for improvement. The A-833 OD tranny has a low 1st gear, but it seems like the 3:23 and the P235x75x15 tires just don't mix well when pulling from a stop with a load. This should help. |

Technically we will not be at the Skunkworks. We will be guests of Teig Machine and Welding. |

hi sages- lowering the rear gear to 3.73 gives you a 11.5 start off in 1st(3.09) compared to a 9.9 with the 3.23 rear. thats a good torque improvement for a truck. my sl6 aspen with od and the 3.23 ran fine but thats a different animal. the 3.73 improves the torque of the final drive to 2.6 from 2.36 in od. think the truck has a full frame. its increased weight makes this a good change. only downside is decreased mpg.keep up the good work. bob f |

Actually, the towing fuel milage might not suffer, as the engine will not be working as hard. It all depends on several factors. |

Just who's who in photo? Inquiring minds want to know. And, would that be cattle prod taskmaster on left? Oh, second closer look, it's a beam torque wrench, what was I thinking. |

and a comment from Patrick T,, the the fine friend that has the garage with the lift. "I don't need Velocity TV. It's kinda like an episode of Misfit Garage, Graveyard Carz, and American Chopper all rolled together. A bag of popcorn and an can of pop and it's free entertainment for an afternoon." and Dennis is great help,, knows a lot,, we actually work well together, as I have forgotten a lot,, together we either know or have forgot about everything worth understanding. For example, those L hand ring gear bolts,, even after putting two of them in, and turning them the opposite direction that one would normally turn a bolt to run it home,, the next one still needs to go in the non normal direction,,who would expect that? not me, but Dennis would,,, on the truck,, ran great, got about 130 miles on the new gears, feels fine. Much more responsive from a dead stop. ![]() |

The guy with the torque wrench is Jeff 'Opey' Anderson. All in all, everything went fairly well. Had to get creative to get the truck positioned on the hoist, the pin for the cross shaft fought us, and had an adjuster gall slightly upon reassembly. All small matters that were overcome. We did discover one difference between the car and truck housings. When I did Bill's Dart the shim for pinion depth was under the race for the rear pinion bearing. On the truck the shims go between the pinion gear and the bearing itself. A few minutes with a die grinder and the bearing was honed out so we could easily change shims. I took a WAG based on what appeared to be on the original pinion and hit it on the first try. ![]() Just another day at Teig Machine and Welding. ![]() |
