My odyssey with the blown head gasket (fixed), led me to a lean condition (fixed), and after all that I had a drive line vibration. Recall, it was running so rough when the head gasket blew that I damaged my motor mount rubber and tranny mount. OK, so I replaced those and the tail bushing and seal, but I still had a slight vibration. My drive shaft was too short anyway, so I got a new one, yoke and U-joints (spicer) and had it balanced. Installed that today, vibration gone, but now I have a whine.

I didn't have a whine previously, so I don't think it's the rear end or the tranny, seems like it would be the u-joints. I measured the drive line angles, I get 1.65 degrees at tail shaft and 0.65 degrees at pinion yoke, seems like those angles are shallow enough. Also, 'm fairly certain there is plenty of room between the tail shaft and the bottom of the slip yoke, I don't think it's bottoming out, but I can pull the drive shaft to check. It sounds like it's coming from the rear u-joint.

Anyone ever had a new u-joint whine? These are the Spicer 7260 type, permanently greased (no grease fittings). I've used these before with no problem.

I drove it about 5 miles, took it on the highway to check for vibration, none to speak of. Parked it, went into a store to buy something. Drove it home, no whine. Took it for another test drive, whine is back. It's not a loud whine, but is noticeable, high pitched and annoying. Any chance this will fade with time or should I not drive it this way?

Thanks all.

Brian

I drove it again and there was no whine. I think maybe it's just wearing in or something....

The whine went away, but now I have the vibration again. Any chance I damaged my tranny during this bad misfire/head gasket failure?

When I'm driving on the highway the vibration sometimes is stronger than other times. When it is occurring, sometimes it is constant, sometimes it seems periodic, like in waves of vibration. If I put the car in neutral during a vibrational episode, the vibration continues, but I can rev the engine and it sounds really smooth. Also, it does seem like there's more drag than before, like the engine isn't performing as well as it used to. That said, the tranny seems to be shifting properly, at appropriate rpms, etc. At lower speeds, like 40 mph or less, I have no issues that I can tell, at least not vibrations, but again, the car doesn't seem to accelerate as quickly as before. I assumed that was the retuning, less advance, but maybe there is an actual drag on the system; I can't really tell which.

There was definite damage to the tail shaft bushing in the tranny before I changed it and the rear seal, along with changing the tranny mount and motor mounts (which also were damaged). I didn't notice any damage to the tail shaft itself, it seemed centered in the tail section/seal, but I wouldn't be able to tell if it were off center by several thousands without rotating it without the drive shaft in place (hence my earlier question in another thread about putting it in gear without the drive shaft in place, would fluid gush everywhere? I assume so).

Maybe it's time I took her to a drive line specialist...I'm outa my league here.

Any thoughts welcome.

Brian
