I have a 76 D100 short box with an A230 3speed and I recently purchased an A833 OD out of another pick-up. What all do I need to purchase to make the swap between these two transmissions? I have done a little research and there are 2 different clutch sizes and some say that I can reuse my clutch fork but others have said that I need a different one. Can I tell without removing the whole trans which bell housing I have, I know there are many types and some are drilled for either trans. I would like to put together the majority of my parts before I tear it all apart and have it sitting for a year looking for parts Thanks |

Easiest Question to start will be, does your truck have the high mount starter (up by the fire wall and manifolds), or low mount starter (down by the oil pan and linkage).... If you have a low mount starter you will need the whole smash: flywheel, clutch cover and disc, A-833OD bellhousing, fork, clutch linkage/Z-bar, rods (assume that the A-833OD came with the shifter and rods intact...) -Lets also assume for sake of argument your low mount starter clutch fork is not hydraulically actuated, either) If you have a high mount starter, you will need to pull the transmission and check the size of the bearing retainer... supposedly around he time of your truck, mopar dropped the 3 speed only bellhousing for the 4 speed 5.125"IBR bellhousing that also is drilled for the 3 speed if the transmission is equipped with the 5.125" retainer.... even if you don't pull the tranny out much you should be able to see if it has 2 patterns for the tranny bolts (vaguely square for the 3 speed, and the 4 speed will have one of the lower bolts out of square in relation to the upper bolt)... If it's just the 3 speed bell, you will just need a 1975-1980 A-833 Bellhousing (or a 1981-1987 bellhousing with the stud mounted clutch fork).... If it's a dual pattern and the 3 speed has the 5.125" wide bearing retainer, then you should just be able to pull your old tranny and slide the new one in bolt everything up and go.... (side note... you may also need to check your driveline slip yoke and the new tranny.... the 1975-1976/77 -ish and truck A-833OD trannies use the larger A-727 style of slip yoke... there are a few I've seen made for the 1978 model year in cars that used the smaller A-904 style of yoke... FYI...) Nothing's simple, right? |

Just wanted to say thanks for the great information. My starter is high mounted so all I need now is a shifter and a new clutch and pressure plate. Can i use any shifter from an A833? Or does it have to be a truck shifter? Is there a plate that it mounts to or is it direct mount to the bosses on the transmission? |

Are there any other places that would have a shifter and all the parts like rods and mounting plate besides Brewers performance? Just trying to find the best deal. |

Junkyard, craigslist... truck boards...For a 1975-1987 Truck transmission there is a metal plate that the shifter plate mounts to, you will need the hurst shifter and Truck rods. All the late shifters are hurst, only the very early cars got something different like the "inland" |
