I have my 225 torn down. I was inspecting the pistons and I noticed that the rods are not centered on the wrist pins, they are all offset from center a few mm. That is, when the wrist pin is centered in the piston the amount of wrist pin that I can see on either side of the rod isn't the same. There is more wrist pin between front side of rod end and inside of piston than the amount between rear side of rod end inside of piston. All six have the same offset.

I've always assumed that rods were supposed to be centered on the wrist pin. If I decide to change the pistons, should I center the rods on the pins?

Brian

Yeah, they're supposed to be centered. That said, I doubt the bit of offset you mentioned'd be enough to side load the rod past its limits in a stocker. It's still carrying the load through the beam's metal.

Laterally to the pins' pivoting axes, yes. Longitudinally to the same, re the poster's question? Haven't heard of that, but then I haven't heard of everything.

It's pretty difficult to get them exact. You'd have to make some sort of fixture to hold the rod and piston and a precise stop for the wrist pin as it's inserted. In my experience you only have about 1/2 of a second to make sure the pin is in the rod where you want it before it's captured in the small end.

Exactly. Thus the "allowable slop" argument (likely figured in during design).

So are is the rod hole that goes over the pin tapered? I know you have to heat the rod end to fit over the pin, and it's a quick fit, but if it tapered then I should put it on large ID first.

There is no taper. The small end holes should be as perfectly straight as machine shop equipment can make them.
