Hello all. I am new here, and I have a quick question. I have a 1980 dodge pickup that has a slant six engine and associated transmission with the "road gear" that helps keep RPMs down on the highway. It unfortunately had a fire in the cab, and it isn't worth fixing. The motor and trans however work pretty well. My dad has a 69 Plymouth Satellite that he bought new in 1968 with the slant six motor with the three speed automatic transmission. He was just getting started rebuilding the motor on the car with 325,000 miles on it. Now, we have this motor and trans out of a newer vehicle that should make it run better down the highway. Anyway, my question is this, are there any big hurdles that you guys know of that I should be on the lookout for in this swap? To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a huge amount of electronics on any of these engines that would require a major electrical overhaul, is there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not certain what transmission you are talking about (in the truck) but the engine swap should be no problem. I'd convert the car to electronic ignition for the swap.

The engine and trans from the pickup will bolt directly into the Satellite provided:

1- you use the Satellite motor mounts, oil pan, and oil pickup tube

2- the Satellite and puckup have the same trans, i.e. Both have 904s or both have 727s

3- use all the accessory bracket from the Satellite

I recommend upgrading to the electronic ignition that is in the truck unless the wiring was burned up. I also recommend using whichever carb is in better condition. CAVEAT- these recommendations assume the truck did not have some kimd of lean burn ignition and/or carburetion system.

Also, again if the wiring is ok, upgrade to the dual-field alternator and charging system from the truck.

If the truck has the A833OD manual transmission then it will take some work to fit it to the car. You'll need the passenger car clutch linkage, floor hump for the shifter and a shorter driveshaft.

You're fortunate in having a B body as that transmission doesn't fit an A body very well.

Thanks for the good information. It is an automatic transmission. And, they look identical, but not having done a ton of swaps like this, I thought it would be best to start here. I'll post pictures of both as time allows, and would love some feedback as we go along.

If the transmissions look the same and the one from the truck doesn't have a wire other than the 3-pin backup/neutral safety switch then it will go right into the car and work fine. As Reed stated, the oil pan and pickup, dipstick and tube, mounts and brackets should be moved over from the car engine.
