Is there a replacement carb for the 1920 (on a 72 Swinger 225), or at least one with minimum modifications ? Saw some info in an older message here: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... n&start=15 , but was wondering if there were any other alternatives. The reason is that I've gone through 6 or 7 of them, and the part that keeps going bad is the steel ball and bronze seat valves in the metering body, which are apparently not replaceable.

The substitute for failure-prone old carburetors is a new carburetor. Not "remanufactured" (junk), not "100% new" Chinese knockoff (junk). This one will fit and work well on your '72 with minimal extra effort. You'll want to use the mount gasket appropriate to the newer carb. Your air cleaner and accelerator cable will fit directly. The fuel inlet is on the front instead of on the side like the 1920, which is easy to get around (good excuse to do the fuel line mod). The 1972 choke won't work correctly with this carb, so get a № 1234 Electric choke kit and off you go.

Problem is, the ones listed as new on ebay usually aren't, and are just as likely to have worn out valves as any of the other rebuilt or 'new' carbs I've bought. That one certainly looks worn and weathered.

That looks like a new and never-been-used carburetor.

That's a beautiful carb. The ink-stamped numbers are there. The protective finish is there. Almost has me wishing I had a use for it!

Why, hello there, new slantsix.org poster. We're none of us sure who you are, but you seem to be having some difficulty. Here's how to fix it:

1. Spray some Windex on a folded paper towel.
2. Apply the towel to your computer or phone screen, refolding the towel to expose a clean surface as needed.
3. Wipe screen with a dry paper towel.
4. Look again.

Look at the top of the uprights that hold the air cleaner, definite wear. Also clear marks on the top of the bolt holes from a nut turning against it.

I disagree that those wear patterns, if they ARE wear patterns, indicate that this carburetor has ever been installed on an engine and used. What are you building? A daily driver or a Pebble Beach Concours car? Heck, most of us are running carburetors that are rusty, greasy, and have lots of corrosion on them. That eBay carb looks like it stepped out of a time machine from 1974. And that is a great price, to boot.

If you are going to own and drive a 72 Swinger you are going to have to adjust your definition of "worn and weathered." If that carb doesn't make you happy, nothing will.

Has anyone tried the universal one bbl from Daytona Parts Co.? Don't know where they are manufactured and I think they were kinda pricey. They have a picture of one on an early Valiant.

You're seein' things, dude. That's not wear (definite or otherwise), it's perfectly ordinary corner appearance with the type of coating Holley used on these carbs.
Nope, that's the light hitting the chamfer.

And look at the bright green of the Teflon coating on the throttle shaft. That stuff very quickly turns dark brown once it sees fuel, and it cannot be restored. And look at the linkages: zero scratch marks or wear circles indicative of their ever having been hooked up.

It's not my auction and I have no connection to it, but this what's in the pics is very clearly and obviously as described: a new carburetor.
