Looks like the local auto parts joint has two choices....a plastic and a bronze.....$3 and $19 respectively.

Before we started our engine rebuild project the car ran good so I think the distributor is fine, just that the plastic gear is looking old....yellowed and brownish looking......

Just go with the plastic again?

What local Parts store in Pittsburgh Has a Bronze gear for the slant 6?

I bet it is listed as a wrong application?

If they order it in I would assume it would not fit.

I would be interested to see it compared to the Nylon one.

Best of luck,

Greg

There is a bronze gear for the Ford inline 6 cylinder engines that works on the slant six. Rock Auto also lists it (or did). I asked the forum about them a year ago and was told not to over think the distributor gears. The plastic was recommended as the preferred choice for the slant six. I don't recall any of the reasons.

Thanks all...will go plastic. The bronze gear is listed on advance auto's site as a fit.

hmmm. Interesting.

There is hardly any load on that gear so plastic will be fine.

As long as it's not dry rotted etc.

And it's not obvious how the new pinion gets installed. See this thread.

I see that the "wrong hole placement" is listed for a particualr replacement number.....

I picked up Dorman 90450 HELP! Distributor Gear and am waiting for it....

Any chance it is "right" ?

Assuming its not, looks like you just reference the original gear hole location? Although how do I know IT is correct?

You cannot use the predrilled hole in the plastic pinion, no matter what brand it is. You must follow the procedure in the other thread.

Should have asked this years ago...........

Why is there a predrilled hole if it's worthless?

In my opinion the pre drilled hole is to fool an uneducated mechanic, ie shade tree, into causing further damage to a perfectly good engine.
Shame on the manufacture.

If I remember correctly Slant Six Dan even contacted the manufacture about their faulty product. Or was it the distributor caps he did this with?

SO I got the new part and compared it.

The new parts hole is very slightly higher/lower than the original on the distributor. That said I cant say that the old one isnt a replacement done wrong.

So will follow the directions elsewhere about pushing the shaft all the way down with the washer and gear on it then locating the hole.
