I don't know if the gauge is on the frits or is actually working but pretty sure something is wrong. Probably last Monday I adjusted my carb a/f ratio because I smelt gas while idling and before hand my gauges all worked fine but now? the temp gauge doesn't move from under 100. I know the engine is hot because I feel the heat after a 15 mile drive. I switched gauges and same problem presides.

well, if your smelling gas still it could be vapor lock, the vent tube for the float bowl spitting up fuel from a hot engine bay. use/rent a pressure tester for your radiator to see if your water pump is doing its job, and if you have a leak in the system. On my Dart the temp always reads good, but I don't really trust it. I have had a vapor lock problem.

I saw a small drip from a heater core hose but that cant possibly be the cause?

I'd consider that to be unlikely I don't believe coolant runs through your heater core unless your heat is on.

It depends on the model of vehicle and the HVAC options. Some vehicles had coolant shutoff valves plumbed into the heter core lines, others did not. Sometimes this depended on whether AC was ordered, sometimes it did not.

Have you checked the coolant level? It might be the level is too low for the coolant to come in contact with the gauge and the sensor is reading an air pocket. Alternatively, have you checked the wiring? Checked the sending unit?

I think coolant shut-off valve just checks flow, but still allows full cooling system pressure to heater core when closed.

Smelling of gas could be from defective fuel pump; pull oil dipstick sniff for fuel in oil.

My truck has the shut off valve on the line. the gauge is mechanical the factory one wasn't hooked up when I got the truck only factory gauges that work are alt and fuel mostly..

Post subject:  on a unrelated matter....

anyone have any tips on replacing an oil pan gasket I've replaced it twice once by a backyard mechanic and once by myself :( I seem to make it worse but both times the engine was in my truck
