Got the bare head back from the machine shop today. I want to do a little work on the chambers to bump the CR. Would appreciate any advice form those who've done this. Pictures would be a big help also. Thanks, Doc |

You do no work on the chambers, that would lower the CR, having the machine shop mill the head will raise the CR... the only item in this area would be to grind valve reliefs if you have OS valves, but you would have to scribe the head gasket fire ring on the head, and also do a test fit of the head to the bore to make sure you don't have any core shift for this to be very effective.Porting, will consist of cleaning up the intake and exhaust ports, smoothing transitions from the runners to the bowl behind the valve and opening up some of the restrictions.... It also depends on the engine build... if it's a high compression performance engine you will easily spend 8 hours on the head...if it's a daily driver or a 9:1 build then spending time on cleaning up casting flash, the transition from the runner to the bowl, and cleaning up the valve guide boss are good things to work on... |

Be careful how much material you remove from the area between the two valves (in each cylinder). It is easy to go too far because you are removing material from both sides of an internal water passage. Don't ask me how I know this. |
