Post subject:  1980 Volare super six accelerator cable and other brackets

For our super six conversion, I know we need a new (shorter) accelerator cable for our 1980 Volare....as well as a new kickdown setup (I think I have resigned to going with the pricey Bouchillon setup for ease of install and use) and a new accelerator cable bracket /return spring bracket at the carb.

Accelerator cable:
Problem is , on Rock Auto, they ONLY list a few part numbers and all are for 1bbl and/or standard trans.....and all about the same length (25-30 inches). Anyone know what length the super six/2bbl cable should be and wear to find it?

Cable bracket and return spring bracket:
had almost forgot about these --- I found a carb but it doesnt have the brackets I need I dont think. Ideas?

So its the v8 cable? Amazon shows it as a fit for the V8 for that year... Will that work on 1980 Volare?

(I saw there were differences between older A bodies for instance and the "newer" volares/aspens

Thanks....I had seen the reference to a V8 cable, but wasnt sure if it applied to a 73 Dart the same as it would to our 1980 Volare.....

And I still dont understand why no online vendor has a "2BBL" or "VIN D" specific cable listed -- but going with the huge wealth of knowledge here! Love it!

Thanks gents!

Amazon's parts catalogs are full of "Ooh, no, uh-uh, sorry, this part won't fit your car" errors.

Here's one of the prime illustrations of an Uh-Oh...

The 1975-1980 A and F bodies had a change in the floor pan firewall compared to the 1967-1974 cars... in that the early cars used a round hole for the accelerator cable...as you see in the link Dan has, the firewall end of the cable has a square plug end with detent that is held in place with a thin strip of metal... you can make the 67-74 version work using a series of washers grommets and c-clips...but it will still leak when going through a good mud puddle, and it may wobble a bit if the engine isn't behaving so well...

It's not fun trying to go the other way... and is just easier for the Pre-1975 guys to get a 318 cable for a 1974 Duster and call it good...

Thanks for the link Dan!

My other favorite is going to the ATP website and finding that they list the 318 flywheel ring gear as the replacement for our slant sixes.

For the earlier (pre-'75) cars that need an accelerator cable with a round ferrule, it's this one.

SO right after I hit "send" on the order for the new accelerator cable suggested here I realized that I STILL dont have the proper bracketry for the 2bbl carb to be used with the cable.

I have already resigned to the idea of just getting a Locar or Bouchillon kickdown....the Lokar is $50 cheaper and I like that...I have a Lokar on my 72 Barracuda with an edelbrock 4bbl......but the Bouchillon seems to be favored by many even at its pricier cost, and it does appear to be more "stock" so likely more reliable and safe....so probably bite the bullet there.

But still not sure what to do about the bracketry for attaching the cable we are discussing. The carb I bought didnt come with that stuff..... :(

See this thread for kickdown options, including ideas on using later-model stock parts (wrecking yard).

Yeah that is thread I was using for the Bouchillon setup (lokare as well).

Its the other stuff I really need to figure out...the mount for the stock style accelelerator cable, spring etc,

So this would be the Bouchillon/Mancini fix for my missing the stock stuff.

Damn priceyat $40 for a small bracket but......it does say it will clean things up too....the stock stuff is so clumsy looking.

Will this be the ticket to go with my v8 cable and super six setup and bouchillion kickdown?

So I bought this cable and we installed the other day......

We found that on our 1980 Volare the plastic square clip is just a shade smaller than the square hole in the firewall.

We used the oem thin strip of metal that was "locking" the OEM cable in as well as a second one.

Its in there, but still a little on the shaky side.....will probably be ok...but want to be sure since its my kid who will be driving this ole girl....

Any easy fix to the sloppiness besides slathering it with duct tape or silcon to be sure it stays in the hole?

And another issue. ...... (why can't nothing be easy???)

The main carb bracket came today so we wantediluvian to tinker....

Installed the bracket temporarily...and found the accelerator cable is too long....woukd have to bend it in the middle which seems like it would retrich motion.....

Here is a picture.

Post subject:  Looks OK...

Looks about right, just bend a bit and catch the end of the metal tube in the clamp and it's mounted, adjust as necessary....

There should be some bend in thecable so you have some play...remember the engine mounts and tranny mount have bushings so if the powertrain jiggles or bounces after going over the railroad tracks compared to the body/firewall, it might not go so well if there isn't a bit of slack in the cable....
