With the 195 thermostat I am coming in at a solid 210 degrees as an operating temp. Normal for a fuel injected vehicle however we do not have the electronic luxuries that help engines survive at that temperature. I have a d150.

What temps are you running with your 180 degree thermostat? Also if you could mention vehicle stats I would appreciate.

What model

My D100 that I tow my race car with runs right at 180-185 with the 180 thermostat. Honestly it rarely turns on the Electric fan that is set for 195 even when towing. The complete build is over in virtual drag section. I do have a dual row aluminum radiator that I think helps greatly.

I was having some overheating issues a couple years ago and I changed the radiator out (after a couple thermostats and a water pump) and all is well!

I usually find the engine runs about 5-15 deg hotter than the thermostat value, even with a good radiator.

One other factor for some of us could be the location of the temp sensor if not stock.

On my barracuda (318) I have it installed in an extension plug that isscrewed into my manifold......I always wonder if its 100% accurate since its not a true "flow" past the sensor...plus the rise itself could act to cool the coolant down.

On the Volare we are working on, no room at the inn for the sensor anywhere on the engine so we are using an in-hose adaptor on the upper radiator hose which I know wont be as accurate but it will establish a "normal" temp reading we can rely on.,

There is no actual concern over "engine survival at that temperature". And 195° is the correct thermostat for your truck; keep running it. See here.

Hey Rick,
What is the radiator from? Is it an OE or a universal one?

I was thinking of one for the Belvedere, that's why I asked.

You may get into some more pinging at that temp and have to back off the timing. I don't know for sure.
