Post subject:  Wrong choke pulloff?

So when I bought a BBD from a fellow member here, he graciously included a new choke pulloff.....I assumed it would fit and merrily went along my way and forgot about it till now...

Looks like this may be for a different application? The rod makes it to the choke bracket on the carb fine but the clip wont work.....unless I am missing something here.....it looks like the rod would need to come from a different direction for the clip to clear properly.....

I was thinking of going to the electric choke kit talked about elsewhere but was planning on waiting a bit to see how this one worked.....

That's not a choke pull-off you're talking about, it's a choke thermostat. The clip is supposed to straddle the choke lever and then swing onto the pushrod -- can't tell from your photo if the clip is right-handed or wrong-handed; they're available both ways.

The № 1232 Electric choke kit is a much better idea than this.

You can always make notes on what works and get a new clip that faces the correct direction from the orange Dorman drawers at the appropriate autoparts store...

The issue seems to be that the clip itself would need to be offset somehow....if you look at the picture, part of the bracket on the carb is blocking the clip from swinging 'round to snap on.....like its a clip for something else altogether.

Here is a shot of the clip, installed on the rod/choke lever but obviously not correctly.

Dan, yeah I know the electric choke is the preferred route -- but as I said , we hd this , its brand new and I thought it would work....we are now close to first fire and dont want to hold up things waiting for more ordered parts....LOL....

Figuring we will work the choke manually a bit for first fire and then wire it open for the break-in

That's 'cause your clip is wrong-handed. You need its mirror image, and it straddles the top of the choke lever. Do as DusterIdiot suggests.

Yeah I am gonna take the clip and my pic to pep boys and see what they might have......I havent seen "dorman drawers" anywhere.....but carded parts by them so I am crossing my fingers....

Was hoping someone might have a picture to help me find the right piece here.

The intention is to use this for now and get the electric choke setup later...project creep is already killing me here.....LOL

Almost certainly nothing; you need to go to an actual, real parts store. The dingus you need is either this or this.

Thanks Dan.....

It would appear I have the "right " one (your second this, though it doesnt have the second loop on it.

My local store has the left one in stock, I guess I iwll try it......cant get the geometry right in my head as far as how that would make a difference but I am sure its just my "piss offed ness" right now,......frustration.....LOL

Gonna head off to the store for that and see if I can figure out an adaptor to gain me 1.5" on my trans line easily.

NOTHING can EVER be easy. LOL

Glad to help out. Those clips are like the helical distributor drive pinion: stare at it for too long and you'll burn out your brain.
