| Post subject: | Lean Burn |
Would my 1983 Dodge Slantsix lean burn benefit from that Hot Shot coil and Magnecor wires?? I know and understand the issue and HEl would be best, but stock for me is the way to go, well for now. |

You wouldn't see much benefit from those items. As you are aware, your money and effort would be better spent replacing the lean burn ignition system (if that is the version of the lean burn system that you have) with a non-lean--burn ignition system. The problem with the lean-burn system is the computer or the vacuum transduceron the computer fails, or the hoses get rotted and leak air, or the system has been mangled by previous owners, and it just doesn't work right. There are many reports of lean-burn computers not working right when the vehicles were new. Putting a hotter coil or better plug wires on the engine is not worthwgile if the fundamental igntiion computer isn't working right. |

The failure is with the initial design itself. They chose to put the computer in the harsh environment under the hood, rather than inside the passenger compartment. Capacitors dried out, solder joints corroded or failed, hoses cracked and caused vacuum leaks, you name it. I had two new vehicles back in the 80s and both had Lean Burn, and both ran well and delivered good fuel economy when under warranty. But over time they pretty much universally fail. My D150 actually had better emission control results after I replaced Lean Burn with HEI and a Holley 1920. |

I wired in a Mallory hyfire box and coil along with good plug wires to my '84 W100 and it helped some. My lean burn seems to work properly though. I would not purchase parts to do this, I used parts I had on the shelf. I plan to do the HEI conversion when I have time. |
