Post subject:  Drool Tube Cylinder Head Heater Hose Fitting
Hey, everyone. I've seen on here and other places that the heater hose fitting for the cylinder head is 5/8" for the hose and 3/8NPT for the part that goes into the cylinder head. I have an drool tube cylinder head of unknown vintage and it definitely does not fit. I bought a steel one and it didn't fit. Then I got a brass one from another company just to make sure I didn't get the wrong fitting. Same thing.

I used calipers and I get 0.4845" which is nowhere near 1/4 or 1/8 NPT. A half inch bolt kind of fits in there ok.

Don't see it coming up on any car part searches. Has anyone else come across this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Okay. Here's what I bought, in steel and brass. Neither fit:

Just for giggles, I tried to screw in a fitting from my air hose (which is a 3/8 NPT) and it fit fine. It doesn't make any sense, unless both separate vendors sent me the same wrong part. I don't get it. Of course, my town doesn't have any company that sells these sort of fittings in-store, so what do I do? I can't keep flushing $10 down the drain to test these parts out, then pay $5 bucks to send them back.

Your 3/8" air hose doesn't use 3/8" NPT fittings. That's 1/4 NPT.

Advance Auto? They should have a Dorman part number that would work. Or Auto Zone....etc.

Buy a 3/8 pipe thread nipple at the local hardware store for less than a buck and try it. Then you will know for sure what you need.

You said your diameter measurement was 0.4845" I assume you measured at the base of the threads nearer the hole - NPT are tapered threads.

3/8 NPT threads at the start are about 0.61" diameter but the pipe itself is 0.68" Same numbers for 1/4" NPT are 0.48" and 0.54", so it based on your measurement it sounds like you have 1/4" NPT.

If you have 1/4 NPT to the heater hose, I don't think that size is right. You will have a restriction in the hose to the heater core. If it turns out to be 1/4" I would probably just drill it out and tap it to 3/8" and then all those nipples you bought will work just fine! :lol: :lol:

Was this head on a passenger car/truck? Just trying to figure out why it is so small.

Could be there's an adapter in there...

I was thinking the same thing as Rick, even if it is 1/4" NPT, just drill and tap it to 3/8" NPT and your new fittings will work fine. I've never seen other than 3/8 fitting there. Use the steel one, not the brass one....
