Post subject: | '67 Slant Six into '78 Volare? |
Hello everyone! I ran into a guy I know who has a '67 Dodge pickup with a built 360. He told me that it originally had a slant six. Long story short, the slant still runs and I can get it for nothing. He even lives close to my neighborhood. However, after reading some of the posts here, this '67 slant might not work with my Volare's '78 904. Is that right? Thanks for any replies! |

Post subject: | Not directly...but here are some considerations... |
So to make that work you have a couple of choices... if you are going to make this swap....and there are some other issues to deal with as well.... Yep the pre-1968 crank register is too small to fit on your 1978 Torque Convertor... 1) You could get a custom convertor made, or 2) You could buy a forged crank kit for a 1968-1975 A-body(or use a spare if you had one laying around after pulling out the mics to check the tolerances...), or 3) You could remove the crank, and take to a machine shop and have them open the pocket up to the inner dimension of a late crank... The next 2 items will be issues to tackle as well: 1) Some 60's era truck motors were a little low on compression (the 1963 'free' truck motor I got after measuring everything weighed in in the high 6:1 static compression range...it now serves as the base block for one of my hi-po engines after carving 1/8" out of the deck and 1/8" out of the head...), so you may need to check this to make sure it's in the 8:1 compression range... 2) The Pre-1972 cam is a little 'light' comparably, but since you probably will be changing the timing chain anyway...if you still had the cam out of the 1978 cast crank engine with matching lifters you can swap all that in (again check your tolerances or the oil light might light up if both the bearings and cam journals are well worn), this will also give you a chance to degree the cam too and make sure it's where it should be. 2 cents... |

Thanks! I may get it anyway, can't hurt to have extra parts. |

That's my philosophy...

So, how about a 225 slant of '73 vintage? I have one in my garage. |

It's all good, you can slide it right in... it will all bolt up......but I would swap your 1978 distributor for the 1973 version.... |

Okay, good. And yes, I was planning to use the distributor from my '78. Its the one that you rebuilt/modified for me. ![]() |
