Two upcoming projects- 74 Dart Sport & 75 Swinger, both /6 with remnants of the original factory air cond. systems. During the project I will upgrade to R-135. My plan now is to use the original compressors, interior venting & controls, to cut down the hassle of building custom installations. Local shops are quoting $600 - $1200 to convert- using the stock compressor and evaporator if possible. That's a sizable chunk of money for a DIY project. On the web I found no kits specific to the mid 70's A-bodies, but many offered to help work out the details. All seemed "iffy" of their applicability to my cars, and not cheap either. Then I'd still have to take it to a shop to get the system oiled & charged. Any thoughts?

You will need new O rings and hoses. The original lines are too porous to contain the new refrigerant molecules. You will also need new compressor lubricant. I hope CharlieS comes along. He is a AC tech and a genius when it comes to this stuff. He can tell you exactly what you need.

You mean R134a. If the existing compressor and evaporator are in good shape, there's no reason not to reuse them. You'll want a new parallel-flow condenser; it won't be expensive. See here (and threads linked there) and here.

Oops, R-134a. Thanks for pointing out the old discussions Dan.
