I would be interested in what others are using for a rev limiter with either the Chrysler electronic or HEI ignitions. I went to an MSD ignition because my MSD rev limiter no longer worked with the Chrysler box and no one could figure it out. Now for some reason the MSD seems to not like the rest of my electrical system. I would like to go back to the orange box but I need a rev limiter, or I might consider going to HEI if that works better. |

What's happening with the MSD? A large value capacitor on the power for the MSD may fix the problem? https://www.msdperformance.com/products ... parts/8830 (don't get the msd version, you can probably get an equivalent capacitor for a couple of bucks................) |

Not sure if this helps, but I have been running the MSD 6AL-2 digital programmable for about 5 yrs on the turbo car w/no problems. Adjustable limiter and retard/advance functions. I haven't touched it to tune it (plug in laptop) in about 3 yrs. Lou |

I installed that capacitor last year after burning out two MSDs which had performed trouble free for many years. I had them both rebuilt and the one in the car has lasted all year and about 5000 miles but it looks like the same thing is happening. It still runs but there is smoke coming out from under the dash that goes away when I switch to the orange box. |

I'' say the smoke is a sign you have a high resistance connection, and it is getting worse. How is the MSD box wired? |

The MSD box has a heavy red wire that goes right to the starter via a terminal block with no fuse and a heavy black wire that goes to ground. There are two leads to the distributor and two to the coil, then there is one smaller red wire that goes to the ignition switch also via a terminal block. It seems like if it was a bad connection the unit itself wouldn't necessarily be damaged and it was both times before. I am going to send it back to the factory and have them look at it again. My alternator puts out a steady 15 volts. Last time they attributed the problem to "voltage spikes" but said you wouldn't see it on the voltmeter. That's when I rewired everything in the MSD circuit and added the capacitor. |

How are the connections in the terminal block? You have to have high resistance to get smoke it would seem to me? |

What's the voltage between MSD large red and large black wires? I think the MSD will draw more amps to compensate if it's getting low voltage. |
