Post subject:  Engine backfiring...

So, I tighten some pan bolts, then go to the local car wash and shoot the oil off the bottom of the van. I made sure to not shoot at the distributor.

I get done and hold my breath and fire it up and it worked perfectly.
So I head about 2 miles to a place to get my hairs trimmed.
Was in there about half an hour, come out and the damn thing is running like craaaaaappppp!!! It is acting like it is completely out of time and when I fire it up in the garage it idles okay and then if I tap it to give it fuel - it acts like it is backfiring?

WTF is going on now?
I was planning on heading back home tonight - and it's 600 miles from here!!!

Ideas?
Suggestions?
Anyone?

I am in Orange, CA down south of LA right now...

Gonna pop it off and look at it next.
It looked completely dry, but I suppose that doesn't mean much at this point...

dry as a popcorn fart...
wiped it out anyway and all it had was some dust...
still acting like a timing thing - popping when I hit the throttle...

could the accelerator pump have toasted on me?
or could something else just have given up?

Nothing looks different and like I said the distributor is completely dry.
I also seems like it may be getting better, but I am not trying to drive it either...

Tried taking it out and no go - rough and rugged with backfiring and no power...

Water gets in distributor...engine warms up, water turns to steam --> misfiring.

And/or, water gets in between plug wires/coil wire and boots or between boots and spark plugs --> misfiring.

And/or, water gets in carburetor --> misfiring.

I am going to check all that in a little while.
Everything is too hot for me to deal with right now...

Not too mention the stress level is through the roof too!!!

When I looked under the distributor cap it was totally dry like it had never gotten wet, I made sure that I did not shoot water near it - but you never know.

So I change out the distributor cap and then try to get the rotor off.
It has broke in two pieces and the main body of it refuses to budge even with me using pliers and reefing on it - WTF WTF WTF!!!

I have a frickin huge string of swear words to yell and have already!
This is the type of $#!+ that pisses me the &#@% off!
Sorry for my language, but this is a prime example of why I hate this crap!
Should have taken less than 10 minutes to change the cap and rotor and now I am into it for at least 20 minutes and I no longer have any version of a rotor now - just a frickin stub that refuses to let go of the shaft!!! WTF WTF WTF!!!

And sitting here I am still sweating like a stuck pig...

I am so ready to get rid of all of my stuff and become a damn hitch hiker again...


What do I have to do to get this damn thing off now???

Well, I finally got it off!
Destroyed the living hell out of it and had to use a needle nosed pliers to get all the pieces out of the distributor!
New cap and rotor on and it fires up - but I could not run it enough to tell if it did any good because it is too late here and all my sisters neighbors and the association would complain!

So frickin frustrating to know how to do something and have done it a million times and then have it do what it did this evening. If it had done what all normal distributors and rotors do, it would have taken seconds and I would have been able to get the valves adjusted tonight - now I have to wait until tomorrow morning after 8:30 to start working on it again... Half a day wasted for stupid crap...

I should have been over a 100 miles north of here on my way home by now - instead of $30 plus out of pocket and another day behind...

Another possibility: Steam gets into the condenser if it's lost its seal, ruins it electrically --> misfire.

Fired it up this morning let it warm up and checked the valves - all at or near .018 like my ISKY cam said to do - if I remember correctly that is!

It seems to be running fine - but still pops a bit when I tap on the throttle.
I have not taken the distributor out and moved it at all yet.

If I am looking at the front of the motor from the front, and I want to move the timing mark to the passenger side, which way do I move the distributor when I drop it back in to get it to move back?
Clockwise or counterclockwise?

I had having an old brain that doesn't remember $#!+!!!

The crank rotates clockwise when looking at it from the front. Moving the timing mark on the damper towards the passenger side would mean advancing the timing so the plugs fire earlier. The disributor rotates clockwise, so to advance the base timing you rotate the distributor body counter(anti)-clockwise.

I just took it out and it is still acting like it has a miss and when I give it gas it is acting like it has no power and is missing like crazy - not sure yet what is next, but at this point I don't think I would make it 3 miles to the auto parts store to get a fuel filter even...

Going to unbutton it and move the distributor next.
But my back needs a break right this minute...

Okay, so I moved it a notch which brought the timing mark almost to top.
That is with it all the way at the top of it's clockwise turn.

With it moved counterclockwise anymore, it will not start.

With the timing light on it, the mark is even with tdc it appears.
Runs like crap that way...

This is the interior of the distributor and I was wonder if that should have some sort of space between it? Looks like it has moved a little over the years out of adjustment?

This whole thing is freaking me out now!
Thinking the motor is toast and I am going to have to sell it to get home now!!!
