Post subject:  Direct Connection Cams

I was looking at the 1975 Direct Connection catalog and came across two cam grinds. Both were Racer Brown cams, SS14 had a 268 deg duration with 0.450 lift and is described as "General Purpose High Performance" and the other, ST21 had a 286 deg duration and 0.520 lift. It is described as "Race". Has anyone ever used those grinds?
I'm aware that DC is no longer and Racer Brown was no more, but now reopened with new owners. The 286/0.520 sounds like a fairly robust cam, I wondered how it might work in a strong street & autocross type situation in an A Body.

I think Seymour has used the ST-21.

I just noticed here that it was the "non-public" cam version for the Hyper-Pak, for the NASCAR sponsored six cylinder class. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/hyper-pak.html

Seymour definitely has used the ST-21 in one of his cars. Depending on the rest of your buildup, that could work well for street/autoX. I have a bigger cam than that in my 64 Dart engine, which did very well at the Carlisle Mopar show autoX in 2015. 5spd, 3.91 gears, 10.7:1, well ported head.....

Maybe or not; careful of the "I read it on the internet, so it must be true" effect. See here.

Well, that is fine if it is not. My main interest was in finding out if anyone had sucess in using that specific cam. Allpar.com usually has good information, including your write ups.

Time and technology has moved on since then, there are as described many more options to run for a hyperpak motor now...

True. I was interested in knowing about that particular cam mostly because I have had LAs and B engines with Racer Brown cams that were very good performers. Something about Brown grind that makes it timeless.

Is it what you would call streetable? What car and what else are you running on your engine?

I have used the ST-21 in the blue race car but not in the white car that I drive on the street. It makes good power but I would call it a little much for reliable street performance, I sold it to Ron Hamby who I believe put it in his white Valiant and then took it out because of lack of low RPM performance, maybe he will see this post and add some comments.
I have never used SS-14 however I used the similar ST-14 which has the same duration with faster rates and more lift with good results. That cam is more streetable and put my car in the 13s for the first time. Last I heard Jim Cox was running that cam in Faith's black dart. As far as I know Racer Brown cams are still available from Jim Dowell in Maryland.

Thanks. Yes, I've contacted Jim regarding the two cams. No word back, I may have to call him.

That was a long time ago. I would guess .100 off block, .100 off head .060 over big valves and Webber side drafts. It did not come up on the converter well but was great on the top end.
