Post subject:  Clutch free travel?
Have a question on a 85 4X4 with Slant 6/ granny gear transmission, 11" clutch.

We pulled the engine to rebuild and get a little more get up and go. Clutch and PP looked good so we decided to leave it in. Just cleaned it all up and reinstalled it. Last evening we set the engine back in and today I noticed that there is no free travel. Yes I checked adjustment. And it appears to me that the throw out bearing is clear back against the nose of the transmission and the throw bearing is just touching the pressure plate fingers. This has a diaphragm clutch in it so I am assuming that it has been changed at some time.

So now what to do? This truck has been off the road for 2 years but I think it worked Ok, since Ryan dumped the clutch on it and split the rear end yoke with it!! :lol:

I know the newer cars don't have free travel, but I am pretty sure this needs some. But I am hoping that I am wrong. Thanks for the advice.

I remember an answer by E-Berg, from Mopar Action, where he says that ''newer'' bearing doesn't need free travel....unlike the '60 and '70 ones!!! It's all about bearing quality....if I remember well!!!!

Well that sure would be nice if that was the case. Does anyone else have experience with these clutches? DI maybe?

I don't believe the '85's had the 11" clutch as an option. If you have one, someone may have done a swap. I'm not sure on the free play but I will check my '84 tomorrow but it has a 10" clutch.

Not sure since the only 11" truck clutch I have is in my car... that being said the diaphragm clutch in my car, the TOB is riding on the diaphragm fingers and there is about 2 fingers between the back of the TOB and the face of the bearing retainer....(but I also have a 5/8" spacer between the back fo the bellhousing and the face of the transmission...)... This bell housing has the older square hole style of arm retainer and not the late ballstud version....

Self adjusting hydraulic clutches don't have freeplay.

Non seld adjusting hydraulic clutches and cable clutches do have free play.

The freeplay is taken up with clutch wear.............

That is where this one is. So it may be OK that way? I figure that would where out the TOB much sooner. Maybe I'm worrying about nuttin!

I'd say this looks to be the factory set up with the 11" clutch but I could be wrong.

Even with the spec clutches in my rig, once you remove the overcenter spring to use a diaphragm clutch the TOB will ride on the fingers all the tims and not come off it, it shouldn't be a problem, but like you I do worry and check the TOB every so often just of peace of mind...

That's the factory free play allowance for all mopars with a mechanical linkage clutch.

They were available through at least 86 according to the FSM I have.
I would guess they were available until the last run of the Slant 6.

I wish mine had an 11" clutch. I don't trust that 10" clutch.

Do you have a picture of your 1984 setup with the NP435?


Given the differences between the mating flange on the other manual transmissions, I'd like to see how your set up mates to the smaller bellhousing and clutch...

I don't have any pics handy but I will take some. What do you want too see, engine to bell or bell to trans?

The engine to bell looks them same as my a833 od in my FD. It has the high mount starter and the bellhousing bolts are on the outside.

I haven't looked at the bell to trans but it would have to mount like all other NP435's.
