So our 80 slant uses the chrysler electronic box ... ICM. Looking at Rock auto, the stock numbers are the same for the 80 slant and v8 as well as the same as what I use for my 72 barracuda (with a 1978 318). The question is --- I use a mopar chrome ICM in the barracuda....supposedly gives me better ignition than a stock orange one.... Wondering....with the cam and 2bbl carb, is the chrome ICM also a good idea for the slant? From what I know, the orange box is rated up to 6k RPMS...plenty for a slant.....the chrome rated up to 8k....but figuring the ratings means higher quality etc.... |

Yeah, I have seen that and am interested.....but for now just looking to swap out the stock stuff and have the old ones as spares in the kid's trunk just in case.....

The old MP ignition boxes have some rules that Mopar put in the manual and the boxes the moduiles shipped in, to make sure that they were used correctly. The Orange box as you stated has a higher RPM tolerance, also has better dwell and response than the stock Mopar EI Module. The Orange Module is fine for high performance on the street, I run one in my hyperpak duster that I salvaged from a junkyard 70's big block Cordoba.... Mopar noted the Chrome box was a race only item for higher rpm use and was not intended for continual use on the street... I had heard this was due to overheating and demand on the module's race only dwell and trigger time, which was also meant for race only coils and better ignition wires.... About 15 years back people started noticing that the new Orange and Chrome MP boxes were having a high failure rate eventually it got out that the last modules had been outsourced to China and hence the problems... Legacy boxes like the one I have that was from the 90's seem to last as long as no voltage spikes or charging issues occur to tank the module.Because all the box does is take the signal from the distributor to trigger the coil to collapse the field and send the spark to the plug, and can do it quicker than points, the GM HEI work around was formed since their modules were a bit more 'fool proof' and much easier to get over the counter even in rural USA, and just do the same thing the Mopar version dies, but in a smaller package. For a stock slant like yours you will not get better ignition or spark from the performance boxes unless your stock OEM module is on it's way out and causing a miss and needs to be replaced (have had that happen on OEM 70's modules), or the potting material decomposes and runs out the back of the module... Since you aren't going to run the clock up to 5-6K on the tach, you will not notice much difference down low between the orange box and a good stock EI module, and you aren't running a 10:1 motor with 4 barrel and headers either... |

Don't forget that the rpm ratings are for a V8. So a 6k V8 rating would be 8k for a 6 |

Another thing to keep in mind: the MP ignition boxes of whatever colour have been of very poor quality for quite a few years now. Orange, chrome, gold, doesn't matter -- all junk. |
