I just put a 904 in my 62 Valiant and the shift cable is leaking like a sieve. I replaced the O ring before assembling, but it leaks like there is no ring in there at all. The only reason I can think of is that perhaps the O ring that I installed is too small. It fits in the groove just fine with no stretching and sticks out farther than the threads, but, nevertheless, is leaking about a pint every two days. Does anyone know the correct size O ring for the shift cable on a 62 Valiant? |

Since nobody has responded in 24 hours, allow me to update: It seems that the problem with cable seals leaking and, more often, fluid leaking from cracked or melted cable housings are common in 60-65 904's. Some are surprised to find these cable housings contain any fluid at all, until one day they wake up and find a pint on the ground. By all accounts, replacements are frightfully expensive, so a proper fix for the existing cable becomes important. In my case, I am leaking from a seal. I saw one commenter mention the metric size green O rings as possible replacements, but he was referring to a PARK cable seal, not the SHIFT cable. Thoughts on this? Not to say my PARK cable isn't leaking as well. It very much is. But in its case, it is leaking from the base of the ferrule on the transmission end, where the nylon housing joins the ferrule. It is leaking like this because some effin previous owner tried yanking on the cable with a pair of pliers, just like they tell you never to do in the service manual. For the PARK cable, I am considering cleaning with brake cleaner, putting some orange RTV sealant around the junction and shrink wrapping it with adhesive lined shrink tubing. Has anyone tried this? I have read of one incident where this method failed, but they did not specify if they used *adhesive* lined tubing. I tried this method already with the speedometer cable housing, double-wrapping a couple of badly corroded spots, and so far it is holding fluid. Of course I believe that the speedo cable is sealed better from taking on fluid than the PARK cable is. |

Repair for damaged cable housing is described here. For the seal leak, it sounds like you don't have the correct-size O-ring. Get with Pat Blais, (206) 365-1966, for the right ones. |
