Post subject: | Beehive / Conical Valve Springs? |
I've read a few messages here about some use of beehive valve springs (also called conical valve springs); I'm looking for a parts list. Rob Armstrong, Dan Stern, Doug Dutra, Josh Skinner have all mentioned them, but unfortunately - there's little in the way of details. Does anyone have anything solid to share for a '68 225? Thanks in advance everyone - have a super week, -Chris |

I think you should be able to use small block valve springs. aftermarket units that fit small blocks should be fine along with matching retainers |

I was under the impression beehive and conical are two different types, with the conical a better solution in most cases. |

OK - after reading several posts, this is the deepest info I can find. >>> http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... s&start=90 (bottom) The parts used also included a reduction in valve shaft diameter to 7mm, so the parts list doesn't work perfectly as a bolt-in solution like I'm looing for. It signals that it is possible though!

NEVjr - LS engine springs are close, might actual work. I'm looking for data. Would you know the part #s that would work by chance? Jcc - perhaps there is a technical difference that I'm not familar with. Sorry if it's causing confusion. Thanks for checking in and sharing your thoughts guys! -Chris |

Call Mike Jeffrey. One of the last heads he did used beehive springs. He should be able to fill you in on what it takes. 308/324-3576 |

Last time I looked at this (in 2009) I came up with this info. Took note but never pursued it. |

SlantZilla - very much appreciate the tip, I'll certainly give him a ring. SlantSixDan - here's where you left off "Comp 26995 used in conjunction with Comp LS1 retainer." If this rekindles any thoughts of retainers and valves, I'm listening :) I'm grateful for all your info; this is an amazing resource! Best to all, -Chris |

Right, but that was just me quoting. I never tried those (or any other) parts out. |

Not really sure why you need a beehive for a slant build, usually the realm of higher rpm or higher ratio rockers such as Clevelands or BBC to reduce valve train weights, but don't bother looking at Comp Cams springs, they are outsourced of course. Most people use PAC springs ,including most cam companies . They are good parts and they have a comprehensive selection often based on LS dimensions. I know of many people running them in high rpm CHI or SCM headed Clevelands with great results, those small tool steel retainers are a great weight saving. |

Post subject: | Thanks Dan, Steve, and Rick |
Dan & Steve - thank you both. Steve - the intent is indeed to reduce mass as mentioned, but more for an overall decrease in valvetrain weight than actual power/RPM gains - although the inherent RPM boost will be welcome. I'm looking to get a quicker-revving engine which suits my use. I'm likely to weight & balance anything that moves (future questions to the forum). PAC is well known to me; I'm looking for off the shelf parts before seeking a custom fabrication mode. I'm quite interested in their custom springs and titanium retainers & locks. Completely anal approach I know, this is my one vice :) Rick - Wow, that would be great! Much appreciated. |

I know for a 318 or a 360 the valve springs from a GM 3.4 V6 work, and are beehive. Not sure if it works for a slant. |
