So aside from going by parts houses numbers, what is the best way to insure getting the correctly calibrated PCV valve for these engines, specifically an '80? And would having a cam along with the super 6 conversion make a difference ? |

Best PCV valve is this genuine Chrysler piece. No, the cam and Super Six don't make a difference. Make sure the grommet's in good condition, and the breather and its grommet, too. |

Thanks Dan Wonder if this is a part that dealers would still carry or online only? Also, that link to amazon says that it does NOT fit my 1980.......any idea why that would be? |

Amazon's parts catalogs are useless at best -- full of errors and omissions. You can walk in at any dealer parts counter and buy this part, though it may be more expensive than the Amazon price. |

Along with Autozone, and all the other auto parts stores (even Rockauto sometimes...)... because they pay a minimum wage monkey who could care less about car parts, and more about their data entry temp job to enter car parts into the database for 8 hours a day, and facebooking in between entries....

It's even better (worse) than that. Many of y'all know I'm in the vehicle lighting field. All the replacement-bulb application info comes from one "company", which in reality is one guy driving to dealerships and learning what he can by peering at the car lights on the lot and pestering the parts and service departments for info. This is why when there's an error in the Sylvania book the same error is in the GE book, the Wagner book, the NAPA book, etc. Sometimes the guy is faced with a bulb he's never seen before, so whatever numbers he finds on it, he decides that's what it's called. There's a turn signal bulb called a WY21W or 7440A. The first time this guy encountered it, he saw "992" stamped on the one he was looking at, so he declared that's what it was. No, 992 was just a production date code stamp. There's no such bulb as a 992. But the catalog says the car takes a 992 in the front turn signal, so Sylvania (maybe among others) started packaging them as "992". Are we having fun yet?

Wow...talk about scrrewy If you google that part number it comes up for different vehicles depending on where you look.......2.2 litre mini vans, 3.9 l v67 dakotas.......but NOT listed for the 80 slant 6..... EXCEPT -- one alternative part number that seems to come up for the 80 slant 6 is 4694335 (an old part number).....which is what several sites say the 5175351AA replaces......LOL Geezuz..talk about a fiasco Anyways that part number pops up around the web so will look for the best deal on it..... |

Old part number (which you will find in the '80 parts book): 3671 076. 4649 335 was a part number for the same valve, but the current part number for that valve is 5175 351AA. It suits most Chrysler engines from the 2.5 4-cylinder and 225 Slant-6 clear on up to 440 V8. The 170 and 198 Slant-6s and the 2.2 4-cylinder use a lower-flow valve, and some of the turbo engines use a valve with a stronger spring-load into the closed position. Quote: talk about a fiasco
Not really, just buy the linked valve and move on to the next thing. Easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy.

Easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy.My fiasco comment was aimed at the complete "screwed upedness" of apparantly every parts source out there..... For instance, "moparpartstore.com" shows this part number for the following: "Dakota. 2.2L. 2.5L. Viper. 4-2.2. 4-2.5. 5.9l gas. 3.9l, 5.2l. All models. 3.3l, 3.8l. Without turbo. With flex fuel. Full size vans. Without dual exhaust." Other sites show variations of this....they dont say it works for the 2.2, but does for the 2.5......still others show all sorts of part numbers BUT these for the 1980 slant six...while others show it as a good part number for in a 1984 slant six vehicle....but not an 80. Rock auto shows about 10 different parts numbers that cross to the earlier part number but not this new one. All it is is parts numbers...I don't understand why its so screwed up for PCV valves.....seems like with the web and cross checking numbers, this should indeed be "easy peasey" ...the technology is available. But its this goofy? You happen to have researched and know the part # is correct for a 1980 slant and others (thanks for that by the way!).....but how the hell is the average person who relies on the parts catalogs supposed to be able to rely on them to get the right parts? Thats a fiasco. Or maybe its just not that big a deal for PCV valves in "their" minds? It illustrates what a crap shoot the parts industry is these days, even with the advent of databse technology. |

Found one from a dealer on ebay....$7 shipped. I called the local dealer and he said $8.80 plus tax and it would be a few days and I would have to pick up....so....made it easy on myself and ordered on ebay. The dealer did say that that number supposedly "goes back to 1951"......has to be a typo on his part..... |

good thread and analysis uncle d- had a basic 2 door 61 valiant with the 3 speed floorshift and 170 6 engine. all stock. everything worked and easy as hell to fix. easy to drive . only negative was rusting . surprised at your comment that 61 s had pcv. this one had an open road draft tube on the back of the valve cover going down the side of the engine. no pcv. doubt the engine was changed since vehicle was low miles 60k. another strange thing was the engine was silver colored . believe red was the factory color of engines in 61. maybe this was an early 61 which still had the road draft tube.what think you since i think you had a 62? bob f |
