Hey guys in need of help on selecting parts for a rebuild a I wanna do this spring I 1979 dodge d100 Mexico built 225 I'm looking to bore it .030 over with flat top pistons and looking for a good cam. I want to pull at as much torque as I can from the motor the truck is 3 speed colum shift with 8 1/4 rear axel goin to replace gears to 3.55 or 3.73s not sure on that yet leaning for the 3.73 can yall with cam selection intake carburetor a good distributor set up I've messaged doc about getting a set of dutra duals already because the headers that I have from Clifford are retarded and also what can I do with the head already planed on porting and polishing both head and intake any help would be great at this point because I'm in the dark

Rebuild parts for the SL6 are pretty straight forward so just about any brand will do the job well.

The only exception are the pistons, try to get replacement cast pistons that have the steel expansion control struts, casted-in around the pin...
(The last set of EnginTech SL6 piston I ordered had them)

Cam selection is a personal preference but for torque cams, a custom ground RDP cam is a good choice.

Is Summit or Jegs a place to source replacement barrings and the like for /6's. I've got a 63 170 in unknown condition. I'm very very very slowly trying to bring back to life.

You'll find very little for a slant six at either place. Most performance places cater to the bellybutton Chevrolet and Ford V8 crowd.

RockAuto is a mail order house that has common rebuild parts,
as well as Autozone, Advance Auto.....

RockAuto is great. I just ordered a set of main and rod bearings and piston rings from there for a 225 I'm refreshing in my garage. If I'd needed to, I could have ordered a complete rebuild kit with pistons and everything, with drop-down boxes to select different bore sizes and crank journal sizes. Their prices typically beat the local parts houses by a lot. Depending on what and how many things you order, you may end up paying for shipping from multiple warehouses, but once you have an item in your "shopping cart," they'll at least tell you which parts in the catalog ship from the same location.

The interface can be a little confusing at first, and sometimes the "application notes" for different parts are not very clear. And just like the parts stores, sometimes the database is just flat-out wrong. For example, it listed crank bearings for both a cast-crank and forged-crank motor when I was browsing for parts for a 1964 Valiant with a 225 (which only came with a forged crank), and some of the parts didn't specify which type they were so you might order the wrong one by mistake if you weren't looking carefully. Luckily, most of the parts have a picture and other manufacturer info you can look at to figure out which option is correct. If you're shopping for something like a master cylinder, on a car that might have come with front discs or front drums, or 9, 10, or 11" drums, etc., then you might be in for a little more research. But that's what this forum is for!

Also, you might develop a fridge magnet addiction if you're not careful.

with RockAuto, register your car(s) for their manufacturers closeout sales.

from time to time they have absolutely crazy low pricing, can be anything from alternators to windshield wipers....

Just keep in mind that RockAuto is putting your local parts store out of business over time. Of course, most of the good ones are gone anyway, but if you need parts that day...

The last truly independent parts store in my area was bought out a few years ago. Sad. It was a neat litle speed shop that had been in business since the 50s and had all kinds of cool old parts on the walls. Supposedly most parts stores around me are owned by one guy who owns parts stores throughout Washington and Oregon.

i could not agree more strongly with you, but it's about 10 years too late. even napa and bumper-to-bumper have gone the "corporate crap" route. nothing is in stock, everything is "next tuesday", prices not competitive. why i still go is a mystery to me, but i do (napa actually pulled out about 12 years ago). rare and specialty parts nonexistant, even in the towns that still have them. yes, i give them a shot, but the disappointment never fails. i'd give anything to deal with a REAL counterman again, but it's all trained monkeys now.

AZ and AA and other chains will also all go out of business due to internet/shipping competition, but hopefully not for a decade or two. I like to go buy supplies and general parts locally, and often they have what I want in a day or less. So, I use the local (not necessarily independent). I am also spoiled in that there is a good independent in town with car guys behind the counter, and they get parts fast, usually. I use them as much as I can (unless after hours).

I guess I just like to vote with my wallet as much as I can. The cheapest way is almost never the best way, in my experience.

Been a while, I get what you all are saying, but I've been using Rock Auto for many years now (can't believe I didn't think of them for my /6) and have had very good luck/success with the quality parts they provide. If you have time to wait for the parts, they are by far the best option IMO.
