Degreeing a camshaft. Ive spent hours trying to figure out why when using the @.50 procedure for degreeing my comp cams camshaft I cant get correct readings and then when using the intake centerline method I hit very close to the correct specs the very first time. Nothing changed in my setup, nothing moved. I just recorded the readings a different way. Ive read online that the @.50 is the preferred more accurate way and this is the way I would like to be able to do it. |

That's what I do - at 0.050" Lift Before and after the max height of the Lobe height. not 0.050" off the Base Circle like Duration in cam cards Duration at 0.050" I also Like to do this with Full valve spring on the Valves etc, Just my preference. Make sure you have a steady Dial Indicator etc. I measure at Valve (on the valve retainer) with head on / installed on the engine......not from just the Push rod or lifter. I hope this all makes sense. I am not sure what others do or If what I am doing is correct or not. Ask 10 engine builders and you might get 9 answers and they might all be correct. Greg |

Thanks for the response, I got it figured out by calling the place that I was using the instructions from ( online ) and they told me their directions were missing some steps. I have two lifters epoxied together, cup to cup. (to get a flat surface). Dial indicator directly on the lifter, then like Greg .050 before, and .050 after max lift. Then double check against the cam spec card, intake and exhaust. At one time, I did find a cam not ground to the specs on the card. Lobe separation was off.

The lobes aren't symmetric..... The larger the angle between the .050 measuresments, the more an asymmetric lobe will show a difference. |
