Post subject: | Methyl salicylate aka Oil of Wintergreen |
Have read that it is possible to soften old hard rubber gaskets by soaking them in a mixture of Oil of Wintergreen and rubbing alcohol and was unable to find any answers using the Search option. Has anyone tried this method? I am trying to resurrect a 1972 Power Wagon - sorry but not a slant. The gas tank is in the cab and I have been unable to locate NOS/useable gaskets for where the gas filler neck exits the cab or where the gas filler tube enters the gas tank. The ones I have are hard as a rock but would be reusable if I could soften them. Thanks in advance for help. Fred |

I don't know if this helps... I've put old rubber gaskets in paint thinner. They get soft and really really big. Then slowly shrink back to size. |

Lacquer thinner will do the same thing. They will swell about 3 times their normal size and be back to normal after they dry. Van's Auto may have new gaskets. |

Van's has a new neck to cab grommet and a new tank sending unit, thanks. I will use the paint thinner on the grommets to see how that works. Thanks for the help & Information. Fred |
