Is the cam button needed with solid mechanical lifters ?
Race / street engine with dbl row timing set cam has .504 lift .

I was under the impression with sbc BBC was only needed in roller lifter engines ??

Thanks

I Cant see how it would hurt anything.

It will depend on how much oil pressure is in the rear cam journal galley - Other Factors may also be at play here,

But we do not want the rear oil gallery on the cam journal to "Push" the cam forward.

Is it needed? I am not sure, Maybe the other pundits will chime in and give you a better Answer.

It very easy to make an adjustable cam button.

If the cam walks forward you can wipe out the oil pump drive gear.

I use them on Chevvies too. Don't listen to Chevvy guys.

I do this mod to my timing covers, it's not so much keeping the lifters aligned, but my first super six build had tryed to spit the cam out the front of the block a couple times that even after FSM torque spec on the cam bolt it hammered the bolt loose after some high rpm launches... luckily it dies just before my driveway... autopsy showed that the cam bolt had loosened and the hammering let the gear get loose enough the cam bushing got pushed out and was out of time enough to stall the engine (kind of like the loose timing chain issue)... that was on a MP double roller set.

So now, after degreeing the cam, I thread locker red the bolt, locktite the cam bushing... and install a cam stop... honestly it's cheap insurance for about 10 minuted of drilling, welding, and repainting...
