Post subject: | Delayed shift into drive |
I have a 62 Signet and I have had the auto recently reconditioned. Recently driving the car and stopping at some traffic lights it shifted to neutral by itself and took about 1 minute for it to move to drive again (people behind me were a little peeved too). When I arrived home I checked the oil level in the tranny with the engine running in neutral, and found it was low - below the FILL mark on the dip stick. Is it possible that my car is having gear selection problems because of the low oil level? |

Yes, that is very common and expected. Fill it and you should be good. I usually fill it up until it reads about 1/4-1/2" below the LOW or ADD mark, then warm up the car/trans and drive it around a little. If it slips out of gear or has weird shifting behaviour, then stop immediately and add 1/2-1 qt and drive home. Then, follow the factory procedure to check the fluid level, then fill to at or near (just below) the FULL line on the stick. Checking fluid: You need to park on a level surface w/engine running, block the tires, shift through all the gears slowly (I usually hold 2-5 sec in each gear selector range), then put it in NEUTRAL and get out of the car check the dipstick level. Add fluid and repeat... Lou |
