It has been quite a while since I posted here, but I am in the middle of the well known intake/exhaust manifold gasket set replacement process. Previously, I did this on my 1980 Volare with the Felpro set, but the manifolds on it were in good shape. Now I am into the same job on my 87 D150, and the situation is much different.

Aside from the obvious need I have to take the manifolds to a machine shop to have the grossly pitted mating surfaces reworked (and the snapped off hot box bolts drilled and tapped), I can pretty well see that Felpro is not going to cut it on these manifolds.

So that is the long workup to two simple questions:

(1) Does the Remflex gasket set obligate one to install longer mounting studs into the cylinder head for manifold reassembly? I saw a review at Summit Racing that says this is the case.

(2) If the answer to (1) is "Yes," then where might I find a suitable set of longer studs for this application?

Thanks for any intel folks...

Slightly longer studs will help. I have always picked mine out of the orange Dorman drawers at my local Auto Parts Store. A few drawers over I also grab some brass nuts for the studs that get non-conical nuts.

When I tried to use a Remflex gasket on my '64 head with the later, thicker triangular washers, I couldn't get all of the nuts started. Thinner triangular washers worked.

Those studs may not have been original to the 50+ year old engine.
