Post subject:  How tight should lash be

I just checked my valves again, and I know 10 in, 20 out.

But when I use that feeler gauge, how hard should it be for me to insert the feeler into that part??

Should it be possible, with force to get it to go, or should it easily slide in/out?

Right now they are all hard to get the feeler gauge to slide in it, and I am worrying that maybe it is all too tight.?

But I am getting real crap poor MPG, so I wonder if maybe I need to open the intake up a little more??
thanks my slanted bros.

Review the valve adjustment article for a description of how easy/hard it should be. If it's hard, they're too tight. Also, those 0.010" and 0.020" figures are with the engine hot. If you set those clearances with the engine cold, they'll definitely be too tight when hot.

thanks for the link. I have read it a few times and I used it to perform the lash.
I did not try the 9, 11 to see if those would slide in or not. lazy and my feelers don't have every number.

The engine was very hot and running the entire time. nice drool of oil down below.
I got the rubber gasket and am going to try to lash it again, when it stops being 100 deg outside.

So I did another Lashing session, hot and running engine. Oil drooling out.

Loosened some of them to get the 10 / 20 to slide in appropriately. I now realize why your article could not be followed (by me) because my feeler gauge doesnt have every number? Like it goes from 8 to 10 to 12. So I do not have the 9 or 11 to test the gap.
Same goes for the 20. I dont have a 21 and dont have a 19.

Oh well. I think I got it set up pretty good. Installed a new gasket , rubber. Thanks again.

After several years I found cam data for my engine. Mopar Performance "268 degree" cam is recommended for 0.016"/0.020" lash and for minimun rattle I have kept it 0.010"/0.020". Even these I have set with metric gauges where I don't have anything smaller than 0.002".

I havent seen any problems "overtight" intakes never. Sure overtight exhaust could burn valves.
