My 1986 /6 D100 is by far my favorite scrapping metal truck I ever had.
Low to the ground for easy loading .
Starts happy ready to take on the day & nice MPG .
I like how your in your own world . Roaring around , Shifting .
like something is going on till finally you see the police radar sitting
& waiting .Then you realize with a smile , oh yeah i'm only going 45 MPH
In town the police seem to turn a blind eye to the good old truck as it chugs along at speeds less then all others .
This truck is my LIFE, it's there for me ,we make money ,
this truck is like my security blanket . it's got my back .

I'm at about 2500 miles on last oil change . used about 2 qt's so far
I checked oil wile cold & noticed oil dripped nicely off oil dip stick
My oil used was 10W40 So I figure raw gas diluted oil finally
SlantSixDan says oil change intervals can go far based on
looking into oil analysis .
That being said if oil gets visibly thin , it's time to change .

As a note I never see raw black gas smoke from the truck . I kinda use truck as many a work men did . Just use it .
I compensate
& use 93 fuel
next I see I might be changing oil at 2000 to 2500 miles
I'd like to fine turn this truck but I'm worried to mess with it.
The darn thing RUNS & to compensate with good fuel and more frequent
oil change seems a small price to pay for the old money maker .

Have you ever changed the fuel pump?

If not, it might be leaking into the sump.

Did you smell the dipstick? If so, did it smell like raw gas? I personally would do an oil analysis and they will be able to confirm if there is a fuel contamination issue, based on flashpoint (the temperature where the oil catches fire). Just my 2 cents worth.

Exactly what I was going to say. The diaphragm can become porous over time and allow gas to enter the crankcase.

There are probably other places that do used oil analysis, but this is the most popular one:

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php

You can order a test kit for free, then pay them $28 when you send your sample in. (Looks like they just raised the price from $25.) Just take the sample when you do your next oil change. Small price to pay for peace of mind.

Premium gasoline is not better fuel than regular. It's a complete waste of money for a truck like yours -- there is no benefit, it just costs more. Black smoke and high oil consumption means your truck is in rough shape. Tuning it up and fixing it will give much better results than writing poetry about how working men use their trucks.

A 1986 truck will have some variant of a lean burn system installed. To eliminate the black smoke, improve economy, and improve performance, I strongly recommend you switch to a non-computer controlled ignition and carburetor. And check the fuel pump diaphragm.

To be clear
No Black Smoke
or Blue
no smell
Just the same I will look into fuel pump
could just change for the heck
oil consumption - some motors use some don't

The part time Scrapping for money is a thing in itself ,
It is a system of finding metal for free
Yes a little time and fuel
but often when you are going some place any way
Like you go to super market and wile to and fro you find $50 & I Do
$250 average per week free find
not earth shaking , not gonna make a millionaire
But to take an old truck and
compensate with more oil changes &
93 fuel to eliminate ping
Absolutely the money is there
the truck earns it
as other trucks have also .

Scrapping is so powerful an earner I have gone to visit family
found local scrap yards and made $300 on a 5 visit just from local toss out refuse using a mini van

roaring sound - - I knew the slants for what they were - they were not
old back when I was 18 They were slant's

If you have to run premium to eliminate pinging, something is wrong. Most likely it is a problem with the lean burn system that controls the timing. I suggest your fix the problem causing the pinging rathet than keep using premium.

Wile the 32 year old D100 looks simple compared to modern and even many cars of the eighty's . Still it's got some daunting looking emission system's
The lean burn sitting in the fender area I bet does not contribute to a better running motor
The research I've done seems to point to a carburetor change and distributer pre-Lean burn . The investment & down time I guess wont happen
but I have a friend with an auto shop I can give him a few bucks and I can use his tools & he walk's me tru work when I do it . So I could try to get truck running factory proper
I guess I'm Leary , cause I grew up remembering the start of the lean burn years .
I changed to Mobil one 10W40 synthetic I'll go 10w or 5w -30 in winter
The motor feels nice on Mobil one
I used the better grade Purolator filter
( It said it has an anti drain back valve )
The oil cost $22 filter was on sale $ 5 .
I'll blindly spend $30 every 2000 miles if it keeps the motor happy
(till I look into fuel pump )
2000 miles is many MANY trips to the scrap yard I respect money
even a $1 is real - But $30 per 2000 MI and $20 per month for 93 is Low operating expense for my scrapper truck .
My last dodge 1500 with a 318 Cost $50 per weekend due to MPG
and was always Dead Empty
The D100 / about $20 and always has a nice surplus of fuel in tank
The D100 / MPG cause's me not to wince compared to the 1500
When I had my 318 ci 1500 it was like this - $25 in tank & that annoying feeling WHAT !!! empty again !!! I did not even drive that much .

Below is typical work of the D100 since I have another auto and job
this is the weekend fun
first 2 pic's are of a typical load
Short steel , Mix steel , under the mess was higher value aluminum
The third picture represent's a typical find from a dumpster
NON MAGNETIC Stainless steel (sure I dumpster dive)
valued at $30 (good weight and pay .43 per pound)
once weekend is done D100 will rest till next Sat & Sun
So it's a nice feeling , I get in the D100
Pump the peddle a few and she's running
let's roll baby Daddy needs money for his kids
Thats a small story of my life Thank God I have this D100 !!
The pay was $170 another load for Sunday is next
