I'm planning to rebuild my slant soon. An acquaintance offered me his slant that he's pulling in favor of a turbo LS engine. I want to keep my original engine, but are there any parts I should grab? |

What year and application is the donor slant? The way parts are these days it is worth it to grab just about everything. |

It's in a 1975 Dart, and I assume original to the car. Mine's a 1974 so it's pretty similar. I just don't have a lot of storage space, so I would only take a part that is very likely to be useful and doesn't take up much space.

If this is a passion/hobby that you think you will be into for the long haul I would grab whatever I could. Dadtruck and I have had a great time sniffin' out parts. BTW...DT, I have a tach that Dennis gave me via Mike in the back floorboards of the car that has your name on it. |

In that case, I would grab at a minimum the distributor, the carburetor, the exhaust manifold, alternator, oil pump and matched cam, oil pan, oil pump pickup, the head (if you have space), the valve comer, rocker arm assembly, radiator overflow tank, fan shroud (if equipped), oil dipstick and tube, air cleaner, motor mounts, electronic igniton system or at least the ECU, dual field voltage regulator system, as much of the engine bay wiring harness as you can get away with,power steering pump and bracket, |

Too bad you don't have the space... personally if it's a good runner, I would pull your other engine to take to the machinist, and immediately drop this one under your hood so you can still drive it while your original is being reconditioned.... then swap back and either store it or part it down.... The other option would be to have the machinist rebuild the bottom end of the '75, then part the best pieces from the '74 and '75 back onto it (shroud and clutch fan would be high priority items)... and put your original block in storage so if something goes wrong or you want to put the car back to "numbers matching" you can... I have quite a few blocks and the original to my feather duster stacked in the corner in trash bags... the short block will take up about a 2' x2' space about 36' tall on end set on a couple of 2x4's with the crank flange facing the floor... |

By shroud do you mean the plastic shroud that goes around the fan? I already have one that's not installed yet--I'm not sure of the pros and cons--there must be some reason why most cars don't seem to have them.And what is a clutch fan? My fan turns any time the engine is running--is that not what it's supposed to do? I wish it would not turn during warmup. |
