Hello everyone. Long time, no post.

Where does the coolant go? :shock:

For the machinists, all the demo CNC mills I see at PRI, they have massive coolant multi jets operating when machining, even on alum, how did this set-up not require it?

And that is why there will never be a slant six head milled out of a single billet unless the cooling passages are bored out and there are lots of cooling passage plugs on the exterior of the head.

A modern aluminum head has been the holy grail for years. I doubt we'll ever see an affordable one built, mainly because the market for it is very limited. it would be great, but I just don't see the economics working out favorably enough for a production run.

Yup. I think the cheapest way to do it would be a two piece milled head, but the cost for one of those would likely be more than the cost to install oversize valves and port a stock iron head. :?

Where does the coolant go? :shock: Its for use with alcohol, and doesn't require water passages. Drag race only though. Top Fuel, Funny Car,
and all the Top Alcohol classes that use it or Nitro are all solid heads and solid blocks. The cooling effect of those fuels allow it to be done, while gasoline can't.

They do this often to dazzle the viewers. With the coolant nozzles turned on, you couldn't see the head being made. Contrary to what you might think, some tooling can be used indefinitely without coolant provided the speeds and feeds aren't crazy above the tools designed capabilities.

the billet 6B head is used in truck-tractor pull events, with Diesel Fuel, Turbos, huge power and heat,, these are water jacketed cnc-machined heads,

the billet 6B head that I saw at the PRI show looked like the valve spring seat area in side the valve cover rails was a separate machined plate that was set inside the valve cover rail then welded in place.

that means the inside of the head could be hollowed out, with tubular walls left intact for the intake and exhaust ports, columns for head studs,,,


you are on track concerning coolant usage,, using modern cutting tooling, the main purpose of the coolant flow is to move chips along a path to a chip collection area and to contain dust. Not having your booth and sales brochures covered in machining dust is a good thing at something like the PRI show. Coolant does help to optimize cutting tool life but is not always necessary.

I am looking at making a two piece head myself, its been done with many flathead style engines in the past 10 years or so, and I don't see a problem doing it with a head with valves in them.

For a demo, they could be using a chunk of aluminum that's softer than usual so they don't need any coolant..........

I never heard slantzilla ever mention that he was. I have only heard that Howard Davis so far is the only one with one, and Rob has posted pics of it several years ago.

Would it save on costs to set up a crude backyard forge and melt down scrap aluminium into a billet (or two) large enough to be CNC-ed into a two part slant head?

I've been involved in 3 different tries at getting an aluminum head done. 1 try died because the primary investor had some bad personal issues. The other 2 died because you couldn't get 5 people to agree on what the head should be. One try we needed 10 people to put up $2K each to get it going and couldn't do it.

I was also at Clay City when a racer approached Russ Flagle from Indy Cylinder Head about doing a billet head off a cad file the racer had already done. IIRC, Mr. Flagle told him to go hump himself.

That is why I always say that the market is too small to support an aluminum head. I caught a bunch of crap when the kid was on here trying to get Edelbrock to cast one. He claimed they would sell "thousands", I claimed they'd be lucky to sell a dozen so I was an @$$#&!%.

Howard did it the only way it will ever get done. He reached down deep in his own pocket and got one built to the specs he wanted without asking anyone else for their opinion on it.

The only other one with enough money to do it is probably Team Green. The green stands for $$$$$$$$. :lol: :lol: :lol:
