Post subject:  T5 Swap Help

Hello everybody. I am sure this has been covered before, but I have a 63 D100 Panel with a 225 and an A435 4-speed. I would like to swap over to a T5 and was wondering if anybody has a solid, complete parts list/instructions (fyi the FAQ regarding the T5 is not working). Any help is appreciated.

Before doing a T-5 swap I would suggest you investigate the NP445 (NP4530) which is a fully synchronized, closer ratio transmission that should bolt directly in place of the NP435. With that transmission you could use a more conservative rear axle ratio like 3.55 or 3.23 and be able to use 3rd gear when climbing hills. The ratios are 4.56, 2.28, 1.31, 1:1. You'd have a usable 1st gear and much closer 2-3-4 to better keep the 225 in it's happy place. You can identify this trans by the New Process tag which gives the Model as 4530 and Ratio as 456.

NP445 seems like a good option for trucks that I have never considered before. That might be better in a D150 than the 833 OD.

Another option is putting a gear vendors OD unit behind the NP435. You can set it up with a button on the shifter to split gears. That will give you an eight speed trans, six if you don't use 1st gear.

They are about $3000.00 new less used. You will be close to that with the T5 swap anyways.

Ebay item 123039504133 with free shipping so the price is reasonable . This would also be good with a gear vendors. The 1st gear of the 435 is good for trailierng heavy loads but not useful for daily driving. I think Chevy also offered the NP445 but it is more rare in a GM truck than in a Dodge. I believe the case is slightly longer than a 435.

You have to watch this... The few Chevy A-833OD units I have seen did not have the nose on the input shaft like
the mopar unit, and the spline count was different as well...

Another item to note is that the early 60's NP435 had a 10 spline clutch disk so if he upgrades to a later unit he will need
to install something like a 1978 Dodge D-150 clutch to match the 1"-23 spline input shaft on the later trans.

$600 is not inexpensive. I paid a lot less for each of the NP445s that I own, but neither had a good output yoke and those cost me $50/ea used. Check the yoke for damage!

Many yards don't know the difference between the NP435 and the 445 so if there is a 435 locally call and ask what the tag on the side says. If the New Process tag gives the Model as 4530 and Ratio as 456 then it's the fully synchronized, closer ratio trans.

I don't think the original poster is paying attention here, but this info might serve someone else who wants to have 4 usable forward gears in their pickup.
