OK, with the help from the form this is how far i have gotten.

Replaced exhaust manifold and muffler, with new units

Used recommended gaskets for exhaust/intake manifold

Rebuilt carburetor with kit from daytona, bought and installed recommended electric choke

did fuel line mod, and put on a new fuel pump

adjusted valves

new pcv valve

added petronix to a cardoin reman distributer, new wires, cap and NGK plugs with .045 gap

so my question is - How loud should the rockers be after a proper adjustment. I can here them in the car barely at start up. as it gets warm they are quit to the point you have to be close the valve cover to hear them. But if I accelerate fast i can hear a noise that is the rockers or pinging from the timing curve being wrong. I don't have the experience to know what either one will sound like on heavy acceleration.

So the situation is im ready to do the fine tuning with the carburetor and timing curve.

It pulls 15'' of vacuum in gear and about 19'' in park. But in gear the gauge moves back and forth between 15 and 15.5'' on the gauge and idles a little rough.

the fuel air screw is about 1 turn out, any further in either direction it will stumble.

and it seems to best at 14 degrees btdc so far, that is where i have it now.

I think it could be the float level because we didn't check it when it was put back together, it has the original float.

overall it is running well otherwise, i also am working on getting the choke dialed in.

Any advice on what to focus on next and what to look for would be appreciated, im almost there.

Thanks,

A newer, very low miler 225 under the hood would sound like a sewing machine... more mileage, wear, etc... things can vary... but it should be reasonably quiet if in the driver's seat... if they don't get oil right off the bat after start up they can rattle or be noisy....

If it's pinging from timing curve it will sound like a diesel/"rattle"... if it's really bad, it will start to sound like a hammer on an empty paint can... any thing you hear after that might be a hole in the piston... or worse....

Pull the vacc advance line from the distributor at the carb and put a golf tee in the end to plug it, or remove from carb and plug with a rubber vacc cap. Then take it for a drive... if it still rattles, reduce the static setting to 5 btdc and advance until you get rattle then back it off 2 degrees... if you plug in the vacc advance after that and it pings you may need to back it off more to make up for the vacc can...

One other thing to consider as well, if the jetting is lean and you are in the mains experiencing ping, it might be lean vs. the advance curve... If you are running a Holley 1920 what Jet is installed? (I have seen them as low as #54 on some 60's cars...)

15" in gear and 19-20 in P or N are good numbers...the bobble in the gauge can be maybe one or two rockers are a bit tight... or a slight misfire/combustion issue...

I wish you would have said something about needing a points distributor, I have a bunch of them that I need to finish refurbishing, and I could have sent you one for $50+ shipping, no core needed, and a mapped curve (and deleted the points since it was a petronix build too...)

I would be interested in possibly sending my original for you to refurbish and map the curve for a stock 1966 170 with the stock 4100s BBS Carter. Then i will have a extra. i can just install the petronix in the original when i get it back. i will also send the brand new points parts i took out of the re manufactured unit to do with as you please, i will never need it. How much and where should i ship it if you are interested in doing that, i would just like my original back.
thanks,
