Post subject:  64 Valiant 170 -> 225 Swap

I've decided to make it a goal to swap the 170 in my valiant for a 225 at some point. My '64 has a TorqueFlite push button transmission.

When I'm looking for a 225 to swap into there, what are things to be aware of? What things do I need to know about going down this path?

Exhaust will need to be massaged due to the 225 block being one inch taller than the 170 block. Use a 67-down crank so the hub register in the crank matches the torque converter snout in the trans, or get a custom converter made that has the correct input shaft spline count AND the larger 68-up snout so you can use 68-up cranks with the larger hub register.

Otherwise, I think everything else just bolts right up. I am sure someone will be along who will correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the response. Great tips! Any idea of how difficult of a time it is going to be finding a 225 engine? I honestly am just getting into this so don't really know how I should be looking.

Where are you located? If you beat the bushes you can still find a 225 for free in most areas. The trick for you will be either finding a pre 1968 225 or spending the money for a custom built torque converter and using a much more common 68-87 225.

The problem you are coming up against is that in 1968 Chrysler changed the size of the hub register pocket on the back of the crankshaft and the size of the snout on the torque converter as well as the spline count on the input shaft of the A904 transmission. Because you want to keep your pushutton trans, you have to either get a pre 68 225 crank or get the custom made torque converter. A possible third option s to swap the input shaft in the transmision to one from a 68-up 904, but i don't know if that is possible. Lots changed inside the 904 from the 1964 pushbutton days to the 1968 no pushbutton and large register hub days.

What about the 1/8 annular adapters. Are those an option for me? I did some reading and felt like it might work?

The annular adapters work to mate a later engine to the earlier trans, so yeah, I forgot about those. I guess you can use any year 225 provided you use the adapter for a 1968 and later 225.

Sorry for any confusion I caused! :roll: I have a bad tendency to type first and think/verify/spellcheck later.

Yes , the adapter will work. I have them available.
Post a add in the parts wanted section for a engine. There are several slanters in you general area, and might have an engine for you.

Depending on the year of the replacement engine, you might need to change the oil pan and pickup, engine mount brackets, Carb (due to linkage)and/or choke, Distributor (electronic/points). As already mentioned, the adapter bushing and flexplate. The good thing is everything can be transfered from your old engine, or is readily available. An easy conversion.

Front of exhaust pipe probably need to be replaced or modified as the 225 manifold is approxmately 1" higher than 170.
