I rebuilt a 225 slant 6 that came to me in pieces. I don't have an alternator. And, I don't recall seeing a belt tensioner. Is there supposed to be one? I want to run it before installing it in the vehicle and need to install a belt between the harmonic balancer and the water pump pulley. Any suggestions on how to get that installed with no tensioner and no alternator? Thanks |

The alternator serves as the tensioner. |

The good news is that the alternator from virtually any v-belt drive Chrysler product from the 60s to the 90s can be made to work on the slant six. There are minor differences such as output, dual vs. single field alternators, and Chrysler vs. Nippondenso vs. other manufacturers designs being used, but as long as it is v-belt driven and the mounting bolt holes are oriented and spaced properly, there is an enormous interchange in alternators on old Mopars. You should be able to find one that will fit your needs very easily. |

What about just using a short belt between the crank and pump? I've done that before. If memory serves me one size is super tight and hard to get on. The next size is a bit loose but would be fine for short term on stand break-in. |
