Post subject:  Voltage Regulator Upgrade

I am planning on installing an electronic voltage regulator in place of my mechanical voltage regulator in my 63 valiant. It appears to be a simple swap.

Every article that I have read about doing this includes the installation in the conversion to the duel field alternator. Would it hurt to install the new regulator with the single field alternator? Would it help, or should I wait to do the alternator upgrade? I don’t see any reason it would hurt.

Also, does anyone have the part number for the triangle plug that goes into the later regulator? Is this a junkyard part?

Thanks from the novice,

John

Killin 5,I just did this to my 60 Valiant and converted to dual feild alternator,I highly suggest this but if you want to stay with the single feild ,Napa sells a drop in transistorized regulator but I would use the dual feild 65 amp alternator if it were me.the triqangle plug is a salvage yard item but they used them up into the mid 80's so availability shouldnt be a problem. Good luck

John,

Funny you should ask that question. I just as of yesterday converted my '63 Valiant over from the old style relay type to the solid state regulator. The part I used is Echlin (NAPA) and the number is VR1001. The price here including the cut for the Governor of the State for Washington was slightly more than $48.00. It will bolt in the same place as the old regulator and the wires will hook up the same way. Mine works good. I did it in preparation for installing the Pertronix electronic ignition conversion. Good luck. RMDV.

Odd part 2, When I converted mine (Dart GT) new regulator would not fit in same manner as old. Necessary to bend one mounting ear to fit. Way I look at is convert to a duel field alternator at the same time. I'm sold on the Protronix units, been running mine for 4 years. now have a steady 13.5 volts as compared to a 12.2V with the old system.

An electronic replacement for the stock regulator is about $10.00 here in California at a NAPA dealer. Ask for the Wells VR706. I see no advantage to upgrading to the "dual field" alternator.
