Post subject:  1967 225 slant 6 turboing and big cam help.
Hey guys I'm new to this i have a 1984 w150 with a 318 in it that I'm going to be replacing with my 1967 slasnt 6. I need somed help on turboing it I've, never tried this if anyone could get me a good base to start off with that be sweet. I also would like to put the biggest cam I can put in this engine I cant find a big cam thank you.

You want a big cam to go fast N/A. With a turbo, a stock or near stock cam is the ticket. Others will chime in with specs. Perhaps what your goals are for your truck will help?

Hi there,

Sounds like a fun project. The best way to help us answer your questions is to start by telling us:

1) How do you want to use the truck? Street, strip, lots of highway driving....?

2) What is your budget for the engine and drivetrain, including the turbo? Do you want to do all of this at once, or build up in stages?

3) What kind of performance do you want? Certain 1/4 mile time? Just spin the tires? Towing weight? ...

As Rick said, you do not want a big cam for a turbo Slant. You can go fast and idle very nicely with a stock or near stock cam.

Well for the drive line it is a 4x4 727 with a 9 1/4 rear end. I have alot of ford 9 inch rear ends too. Well I would still like to use it as a truck tow a thing here and there and get around 15 mpg or so. I have a 60mm turbo off a old cat diesel idk if that is way to much for it to bite on lol. I would like to see 300 ponys out of it I have 1500 to 3 grand to do so. Thank you all for helping.

60 mm should work. The biggest issues will be piping the turbo and a wastegate, then setting up a good blow-through carb. I suggest a Holley 500 2bbl, modified for blow through. You will need an AFR gauge too, and a way to retard timing under boost.

Ok cool so why a 2 barrel carb not a 4 barrel and how many pound's of boost can I safely run

Also I have the tranmission from that 67 can I just bolt the 84 727 to that slant 6 to make it have a 4x4 or do I need to do something else. Thank you guys

The 67 engine will not work with the 84 727 trans. The converter pocket in the end of the crank is too small for the 727 converter. What trans mission is the 1967?

2 bbl is easier to tune and will make almost as much power, in the roughly 300 HP range.

The amt of boost will really depend on how good of a tuner you are. Careful means using an AFR gauge and carefully tuning the carb for no higher than 11.5:1 AFR under WOT. This also means having at most 18-20 deg of ign timing advance under WOT/boost. With not-so-careful tuning, I would stay at 6 psi or below. If you are more careful, 8-10 psi... Above that and you will have to be very careful on pump gas.

I believe it's a 904 trans is there anyway to make a 727 or any 4x4 trans bolt up to the slant 6 it's always been a dream of mine to have a 4x4 with the slant 6 in it. Thank you everyone for all your help it is greatly appreciated ☺

Either get a 68 or newer engine, or change the crank in the 67 engine to one from 1968 to 1975 225cid.

Did they ever put 727's behind the Slant 6 in 67 back 4X4's ??? I really don't know much about the automatics in the 4X4's, but guessing they may have had the separate transfer case setup.

If they did it probably would also have an adapter plate... the only ones I have seen in that year range were the NP manual with the transfer case.

I think a 4X4 with a turbo Slant on 6 psi would be fun. I am sure it would make as much as or more power than a stock 360 from the early 90s or under.
