So I had my mechanic evaluate my 63 Dart and he found a few issues. I was wondering if you gearheads could point me in the right direction for the right parts!! :)

Mechanics list
-Power steering box center shaft seal
-power steering unit hoses
-rear main seal eng-- what is that?
-Tran pan gasket and speed do unit gasket

And what's the level of difficulty per job?!
Thanks fellas

Welcome on the board. As soon as you can, get the three books listed in this thread.
Quote:
Power steering box center shaft seal
…is almost certainly not the only worn-out part of the steering box. A remove/replace job with a good quality replacement steering box is going to be the best and most cost-effective repair here. That means no Cardone or other-brand junk through normal parts store lines of supply, but rather this one or, if you want the steering wheel to feel less "wheeeeee!" (disconnected from what the car's doing) it'll be the PSB1 listed here.
Quote:
power steering unit hoses
Easy, fast replacement. Pressure hose will run you between $30 and $40 and takes about 5 minutes to replace. Return hose: a couple of dollars and another five minutes.

rear main seal eng-- what is that?
That's the engine's rear main (crankshaft) oil seal. Replacing it is a bit of a job that you really don't want to do without a proper vehicle lift—trying to do it on your back with the car jacked up is an exercise in pain, misery, and frustration.
Quote:
Tran pan gasket and speed do unit gasket
Trans pan gasket (and filter retrofit!) see here. Speedo cable seal isn't difficult to replace.

Other stuff: Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. Other improvements to make the car somewhat less completely unsafe are described here.

Mechanics list
-Power steering box center shaft seal
-power steering unit hoses
Eliminate all your Power Steering problems by switching to Manual steering
-rear main seal eng-- what is that?
Something you replace when you rebuild the engine. (out of the car!)
-Tran pan gasket and speed do unit gasket
replace all the Transmission gaskets, seals and O-rings while you have the engine out for rebuild.

Mechanic sounds like he wants to string you along (?)
Is this going to be a driver?
Got good brakes? Dual M/C?
Trans. PB or Manual?
1963 is a Cool Car, except for the rear window

Oh, come on. The original poster is new and sincerely asking for help. Thoughtless answers are not helpful. Why you gotta be like that?

Eliminate a P/S leak by ripping out the power steering system and converting to manual steering? Swapping to manual steering means not only still having to buy a steering box (used ones = worn out; rebuilt ones cost about as much as a rebuilt power steering box) but also buying a different steering column or steering shaft or buying a (surprisingly costly) adaptor. And winding up with a different kind of steering which the owner of this car never said he wants.

The mechanic is trying to string him along? No, the mechanic listed plausible problems with the car. Fixing them individually is perfectly reasonable, and not a string-along. A leaking rear main seal does not necessitate an engine rebuild, and a leaking transmission pan gasket and speedo pinion O-ring sure as hell do not warrant pulling and overhauling the transmission. What you're advising is a surefire recipe for big-dollar, endless "feature creep" and a never-completed project car (talk about a string-along!), when all the OP wants is some guidance and experienced eyes on the reported list of rather minor, readily fixable issues with the car. The mechanic said there's a transmission pan gasket leak. When's the last time you saw a manual transmission in a '63 Dart that has a pan, let alone a pan gasket? And you think a newbie has any idea what the heck a "pb" transmission is? That's not helpful.

Legitimate questions deserve legitimate, thoughtful answers. If you can't bring yourself to respond on that basis, remember it's Christmastime and be nice; Slanta Claus is watching you.

Not being sarcastic, but I have learned a lot by reading posts on this site, also went to a swap meet and found a 1964 Service Manuel which tells you a lot of stuff you can do on your own. You might find a Service Manuel on Ebay make sure it has your year and model car.

No need to hunt around. Follow the link (red text) in my first post in this thread. The last two words of the sentence, "As soon as you can, get the three books listed in this thread."

What would you consider a reputable Brand?
