I have a 198 engine I'm building, Eng. #'s GW 198R 3548. I've tried to determine it's year of build and I found a web site that used a date started back in the sixties as a begining point. So what I found is that this engine may have been built April 16, 1971, but I'm not really sure. I'm wondering if this head may have hardened valve seats. Anyone have any ideas? Thanx.

Unless the head itself is a transplant from a later engine, then no it's a bit too early for hardened seats.

I was thinking that it may not have hardened valve seats. I have found a 74' engine and I believe that one will have hardened seats and that would probably be the better head to use, as long as it's in good shape.

G: Engine originally built for installation in a 1971 model year vehicle
W: Windsor engine plant (Ontario, Canada)
198: Engine displacement
R: Regular fuel
3548: Engine built on 15 April 1971

No, the original head on this engine did not come with hardened valve seats. It will be wise to add hard exhaust valve seats during the rebuild. The '73-up heads that came with induction-hardened exhaust valve seats aren't necessarily a better bet on that front; the original hardening was not very deep and tends to get easily ground away in the course of an ordinary valve job, so you'd want to put in hard seats there, too.
