Post subject:  Start Motor 9 tooth 148 Ring Gear

Hi All,

I bought this Valiant with the Gearbox and Starter Missing. I found a gearbox, made the linkages. (I were quite chuffed how quickly I found a Box as Most Valiants were fitted with Auto Box in South Africa).

After Battling to fit the starter from my Auto 65 Dodge Dart I found out this car has a 148 tooth ring gear and needs a 9 tooth starter. From my research it appears this should be a Bosch Starter.

Finding a 9 tooth starter locally will be difficult and were wondering if one could swap the 10 tooth Bendix from the Chrysler Reduction Starter with a 9 tooth from something local.

1) Google tells me it should be a 9 tooth 25mm gear. Is this Correct? I see a lot of Euro Cars are fitted with a 9 tooth 25mm Gear.

2) Has anybody here converted a 10 tooth to a 9 tooth and from what car was the gear/bendix from.

3) Is there and alternative starter that can be used maybe modifying the mounting bolts.

4) Or... Can the 148 Ring Gear on the Flywheel be swapped with a 122 Torque Converter Ring Gear.

Thanks for the Help.

You cannot convert the Chrysler 10-tooth starter to a 9-tooth starter. There are no 9-tooth pinions that can be installed in the 10-tooth starter. You will have to get a 9-tooth starter, either from North America or from Australia. There were several different 9-tooth starters used in Australia on various Valiant models from 1963 through 1981, and any of them will work for you. North American options are more limited and probably more expensive to ship to you.

Or you could swap on a flywheel with the appropriate ring gear for the 10-tooth starter.

Thanks for the advice SlantSixDan.

I will be searching for both a 9 tooth starter and the smaller flywheel, going with the solution that appears first.

What is the appropriate ring gear tooth count for the 10 tooth starter on a manual fly wheel? Most Mopars in South Africa were auto so I would like to know what I need to go Hunting for. :D

I can get hold of a NOS 122 torque converter ring gear. Will this fit the 148 fly wheel?

Thanks Again.

Yep, the two applicable ring gears are as follows:

Chrysler p/n 2121 195: 148 teeth, for use with 9-tooth starter, for use on flywheel or torque converter.

Chrysler p/n 2121 196: 122 teeth, for use with 10-tooth starter, for use on flywheel or torque converter.

So if you can snag the 122-tooth ring gear, that would enable you to use the 10-tooth starter. Be advised you will need to add a starter relay to the car.
